Hi i have a gateway m680xl and iv taken it on a trip around the world... and has come back in a "dirty" condistion... theres alot of dust on it everywhere.. smudges... dust and tiny bits of dirt and or sand under the keyboard... in between the touchpad buttons.... on the border of the touch pad...

the fans have dirt.... and... the screen is a mess *glossy*.... and i have these 2 nasty wrist marks on the wrist pad... its a real eye sore... and its mostly just sweat... and the dirt.. it like fused onto the plastic...

is there anyway to take apart this thing and clean it inside out?.... i realy wanna make it almost like new again...and then give it a format and im good to go .. .

thanks

absolut! u can take apart any laptop. there are service manuals on ebay, or browse about in different forums to collect bit&piece of pictures of related laptop being taken apart.
or, take a deep breath and just plunge right in, just make sure u mark everything.

check the gateway forum area, especially the m68xx groups, many good personal guides to take the machine apart and clean up.

grades of success:
1. back in one piece
2. biop - minus 1-3 extra screws
3. biop - minus 4-5 extra screws
4. more than 5 extra screws - man, u r in for something,
5. help?

cheers ...

You can ask gateway support to replace the plastics on the computer to get rid of the rist marks. (need active warrenty thow)

I've done it twice.

ive found that most household cleaners are good for cleaning the marks from the wrist. windex ive used prety good.

you should be able to get a good manual from the gateway site. well not all sites offer them but that would be a good place to start looking for one.

its not really all that hard to take apart and put back together just take your time and watch where everything comes from.

to clean the inside i use canned/compressed air and q-tips. you will want to stay away from the vaccume, too much static. you could zap something to death.

I'm all for giving it an acid bath!

Seriously, once you get the plastic/metal parts off, give it a bath in a nice foaming bathroom cleanser, use a soft toothbrush to get off the chunky gunk. Rinse, pat-dry and let air-dry overnight.
