Sony or Lenovo Thinkpad?

Thread Starter
I'm in a real bind and I need all the help I can get! I'm stuck on making a decision between getting the Sony Vaio SZ230 P/B or on getting the Lenovo Thinkpad T60. I've compared both systems and internally they're about the same but looks and reputations seem to be the factor. Please I need help in making a decision I'm goning to be a freshman in college next semester and I'm going into engineering I need the best notebook choice. Thanks.

The sz will be a bit smaller with it's 13" widescreen. It also has a nice glossy screen and pretty good looks (in my opinion). The t60 will have better build quality and durability/reliability. It will also have a better keyboard, and the awesome trackpoint (you don't think it's important until you learn to use one...). It really just depends on what is more important to you.
I've always heard sony's tend to be more expensive without any reason; no better parts or reliability, just the sony name. I've never really used one for more than a few minutes, though, so it's just what I've heard people say. I really like my thinkpad, though, and it would take a lot for me not to get a thinkpad as my next computer, when I eventually decide to upgrade.

though i have neither a sony or thinkpad, i'd take the thinkpad. i'm guessing the sony will only have wxga, but the t60 can come with the 14" or 15" sxga, which gives you that little extra screen space. if you use engineering software (through your school), especially cad sort of things, you'll really like that extra space.

i would grab the thinkpad without even thinking about the sony. partially i am a tad biast because i have a T23 from a few years back....however I can tell you that except for a new battery (old one was completely wasted after many years of service) and a new charger (lost the original) i have not had any issues with it... its been as solid as a rock. My friend had a screen replaced on his T23 and IBM was fast and professional in their RMAs (that was back in IBM not lenovo days though).

why wouldn't i even think about sony? Ok,....the screen is to die for! But their tech support is ungodly horrible! (or so i heard), they also like to use propriatary formats (read: Memory Stick Pro card reader instead of MMC/SD like everyone else).

Thinkpad hands down! (At least, I'd take a thinkpad hands down)

Better build quality, better customer service/support, etc.

The Vaio has its hybrid graphics options going for it, its sleeker look, the screen, and that's all I can think about.

Also, I've read from reviews that Vaio SZ comes with a lot of bloatware and that Sony made re-formatting the HD to customize the pre-installed software a huge hassle.
