My Alienware Critical Issues person just e-mail me this.

Mr. ******,

Production of the 9700’s started yesterday. Unfortunately the units configured with the UXGA display have not because we are still waiting on that part to be delivered. At the moment they have not provided me with an ETA, but as soon as I am notified I will let you know. If do not wish to wait, we can change the display to XGA and possibly upgrade something else to make up for the difference. Let me know.

Is it still really good for gaming to get the XGA instead of the UXGA? Is there much of a difference? Is it okay to just switch to the XGA so they can start making my laptop?

Well, with all the talk about backordered UXGA screens, I just got off the phone with a lovely Miss Grace, who said;

--there is no record of any parts backordered on my system, to include the screen
--the remainder of my balance has now been charged to my credit card.

I am under the assumption they didn't charge the balance until they were ready to build it, so, seems to be good news to me.

As always, I'll keep everyone up to date with the progress on my end.

DFrey,
Personally, no, I would not go with a 1440x900 resolution screen.

I would find that painfully large on a 17" screen. My 3790 has the 1920x1200 and I couldn't imagine a lower resolution.

But, that is me. If I were you, stop by a Best Buy or Circuit City. Take a gander at the laptops they have and check the displays. If you like a lower resolution there, then maybe it would benefit you. Of course, those laptops there won't have the graphics power of the m9700, but you can get a taste for what IE and regular applications might look like.

the UXGA will definately be worth the wait, expecially if its only gonna be a couple of days difference

o,ok but why isnt 1gb enough besises im trying to kepp under $3,000

and besides im already up to $3,207 but i can spare 2 more months of $97.00 a month
post #16 of 25
the memory has alot to do with how fas the game will preform
post #17 of 25
Well, 1G should be sufficient for most games, you might get a little bit of drag with BF2 because it's so memory inefficient. You'll want 2G if you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista when it comes out.

You can upgrade the memory yourself, but the problem is there are only two slots on the m9700, and AW uses dual stick for whatever you order. If you could order it with one stick of 1G, you could add another at a later date if you needed it...

As for the screen resolutions, I use a CRT monitor now, 22", and I play most games at 1280 x 1024, I leave the desktop at 1024 x 768 so I can read the text on webpages. It works fine.

The highest resolution is best looking for games if you have video cards that can handle it. The SLI 7900gs's should do fine at native resolution for most games, but I'd imagine we'll have to scale back on some.

Movies will look better on the higher res too.
not too many games will burn more then 1GB of memory, but they come close. i say 2gb just so when the next game comes out, you are all set.
