Both the nc8000 and the i8600 come with the ATI 9600 128 pro card. Gaming ability should be about the same for each machine I believe.

Also, in all actuality, the 15" 4:3 lcd on the nc8000 will give you more screen real estate for most games out there right now. Otherwise the screen real estate would be almost exactly the same IF the game supported the 16:10 widescreen set up. Personally I still prefer the 4:3 setup over the widescreen LCD. You are correct in that the nc8000 is one very pricey rig though!
My mistake. I meant the NC8000. I did not know the nc8000 came with 128mb of ram. I must have missed that when I configured one. I was so shocked by the price I didn't spend too much time on the page.

It is the NC6000 (which is limited to 64mb of vram) that I am leaning towards.

The NC8000 is a damn nice machine. But at 3 grand, I'm just not interested. Laptops are replaced too frequently and are so limited in upgrades that it is just not worth that to me. Esp since the NC6000 and 8600 are so close and 1/3 less money.

Looks like the HP is 1 pound lighter (6.5lbs vs. 7.7lbs?)

^^^^ I hear ya on the price of the nc8000. The i8600 has *almost* every option I want. I am just trying to decide if the $700 (or so) savings of the i8600 is worth the lower build quality/problems and the widescreen lcd. $700 is a lot of cash. The weight difference doesn't bother me much.

The Cyberpower X64-8000 that fiction ordered (see fiction's thread) looks really nice for the price. Configured the way I would want it comes in around $2200.00. I am sure the battery life would be only about half of a comparable PM centrino however. Also probably runs quite a bit hotter too.

If you go to the dell forum you can usually find some coupon code to make the 8600 another 15% or so off.

I spec'ed out the nc6000 and 8600 and similarly equipped they are nearly the same price.
For me, it is

NC6000
+weight (only 4.9lbs)
+battery(6.5hours per battery, allows for 2)
+4:3 ratio screen

8600
+screen 15.4" (but wide screen, which I am not too keen on)
+video ram 128mb
+CPU 1.7max vs. 1.6max

If you can live with 3 hours of battery, the Emachines is the one to get. Nearly as Nice as fictions (64mb vram is the only strike I recall) and only 1299 at best buy.

Bjorn.... the ATI 9600 128 is a must for me. There are very few machines that offer the PM centrino and the 9600/128 vram. I guess I could get the Voodoo centrino gaming rig for about $4500.00 spec'd the same as the nc8000 though. BTW, when figuring the price difference between the nc8000 and the i8600 I did take the 15% dell coupon into account along with the $250 rebate dell is offering right now also.

The ATI 128 9600 and Centrino 1.7 were both on my must have list too.
But after looking at laptops for several weeks now, I have pushed them down a little bit. A 1.6 is not as desirable, but is probably fast enough. The same with 64mb of ram. Not as desirable, but probably good enough to play Call of Duty and Madden.
The reason I am so tempted by the NC6000 is that of all the laptops with the same specs it has by far the best battery life. I live in the USA but travel every once in a while. 13hours (with two batteries) is almost too tempting to pass on.
There is actually a 3rd system that is equally tempting to those two. And that is the EMachines 6805/7 I went to bestbuy and circuit city and played with them. They are SO fast. If there were some method to add a battery for over 4 hours of use on one, that would be my easy choice. I just don't think I could live with 3 hours of battery time.
