m1210 Only Software audio?

Hello all,

Been playing a few games on my m1210 and the sound is quite choppy. Then while I was in BF2 I noticed that I could only set the sound option to software not hardware. Is this correct?

Can someone point me to the latest drivers for the sound card in the m1210? I have the upgraded HD sound, but I read this is just a software thing? Is this the problem? If I uninstall the creative stuff will I get hardware sound?

Any advice would be great!

Many thanks,

Si.

There is no sound card in the M1210. The Creative add-on is only software.

Sorry what do you mean no sound card?

Where is the sound coming from then?

I know the creative stuff is only software but the m1210 has a hardware soundchip right?

Simon.

I think what he means is that there is no sound card added to the computer when you upgrade to the sound audigy driver and software. It does though have the onboard sound card.

If the sound is real choppy, make sure your harddrive isn't running in PIO mode. I don't know how many sets of speakers Dell has sent me for Laptops with this simple software issue.

The game runs fine. And I have 2gig of ram so it shouldn't be an issue. It's just when there's more than a few sounds happening all at once it seems to be a problem. The harddrive isn't running in PIO.

Anyhow.. Back to my question.

Is the sound showing software because the creative drivers are on there?

If I removed that stuff would be show as hardware? I'm just thinking the problem might be that the creative stuff.

Can someone out there with an m1210 who didn't get the creative HD sound "upgrade" test BF2 and see if it shows software or hardware please?

Simon

Hi Simon,

I'm interested in this answer. My feeling is that the onboard sound, although implemented as part of the chipset on the motherboard, is not considered "hardware" for purposes of BF2. I think that you need a dedicated and separate sound card for it to be considered hardware. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will let us know.

M1210 is not a gamer notebook, so I'd guess the onboard Audigy is for music.

" M1210 is not a gamer notebook, so I'd guess the onboard Audigy is for music."

Firstly, why isn't the M1210 for gamers?

Seconly, there is no onboard Audigy, it's only a software update.

hello all,

worked out what was wrong so thought I'd post back in case anyone else is having this problem.

Under sounds in the control panel there was a setting under hardware for sound hardware acceleration which wasn't set to full acceleration for some reason! My friend at work who also has a 1210 also had the same thing!

Not sure why you'd ever want to not set this to full but after changing it all games are sounding as they should and BF2 now lists it as a hardware soundcard not software.

All the best,
Si.

That slider is there for when you have troubles with compatibility. You can back it off in order to keep from crashing or other major errors. You are correct in that you should always keep it at max unless you are having some sort of trouble. By default it should always be at max, not sure why yours was not. I just checked mine since I did a clean install last night and it was indeed at max already.

Yeah not sure why it wasn't set to max, but as I say my firend who also has an 1210 found his was the same, both of us haven't formatted so maybe that's the dell default?

Anyhow I'm just happy it's all working again now

That could be. I did notice after switching back and forth between the USB docking audio and the integrated that the slider would move 2 clicks to the left from max performance. Maybe that has something to do with it? Or maybe when changing settings they can affect the slider?

I seems whenever I switch from 2 channel to 5.1, which is everytime I unplug it from the home theater, that slider goes back to "basic". I have to manually switch it back to full, which is very annoying. It does stay there until the next time I unplug and reconnect, but I wonder if it actually does anything.

Simonpickard, I would assume since you were getting choppy sound that it must really do something, at least on some games. Maybe I will leave it down the next time I play and see if it makes a difference.

Hi there,

Yeah can't say for sure what it does but since changing it to Full I can now change the sound from software to hardware in BF2 and I'm not getting sound fx cutouts anymore.

Simon.

Hey I had this problem too found a fix for it. If you have the A/V pack that is. Go to the logitech quickcam settings, Click Audio tab, and then uncheck the Enable AEC feature and the audio chopping goes away. It did it to me in Quake 4. An now it works.
