Network Problem-Need help NOW!!!

Thread Starter
I have three computers all networked onto on shared network drive. The drive (G: Drive) is picked up by the "host" computer and one of the others. But the third doesn't pick the drive up at all. I tried mapping the drive but it can't find it. All the computers are running on XP Pro SP 2. Need help now.

That's not a whole lot of information to work from. All we know is that one of your computers can't see a share and that you're in a hurry to get it fixed. Can that third machine see the network at all? Can you see the other computers and their shares when you browse My Network Places and what happens when you try to access them?

no i cant see the network drive I'm looking for and it has to be fixed within an hour. When I try to mapping the drive again it says "the network path XXXXXXXXXX could not be found

Btw in case it helps ya it can view the other computers on the network but doesnt detect the network drive for some reason.

I take it this is a mapping that was working before. I don't know what could have happened to lose it. I can only suggest trying to browse through My Network Places trying to find the share, or to run the Network Setup Wizard to reconfigure the file sharing.

Sorry, not really. I generally just fumble around with shares and workgroups until things finally work, and then I stop screwing with things before they break again. I consider myself pretty knowledgable about a lot of network things (been dealing with routers etc. for over a decade) but I've never really understood Windows networking and file sharing.

when you map the drive, instead of mapping to ip address try to map it like this:
\\(computer name)\(shared folder name)
I'm not sure about mapping a drive because I use this way to map a shared folder across my network. Hope this works and is not too late.

Hello there.

You mentioned SP2 on XP.

1) have any automatic updates been implemented?
2) check the desktop firewalls and make sure that tcp port 445 is open
3) user authentication hasn't changed in any way?
4) you mentioned you can ping the machine hosting the share, can you ping back towards the offending client?
5) is this a windows domain or is it a peer to peer workgroup?

All the best regards

Rich
