Don't know what you reckon to this, but having done a pile of research in September of last year, I came to the conclusion that it was all round cheaper to go through PCTorque. I bought an 8890 with 2.8, 60gb 7200, 1gig ram, dvd/cd-r, 16" screen.
Despite the international shipping costs and the VAT payable, it still worked out cheaper than the equivalent system bought from a UK company. For example, from the uk companies, 1gig ram was not available nor the 7200rpm hdd. So i suppose it depends on the setup you want - if you can get what you want from a uk based company then all's good, but don't necessarily rule out sourcing it abroad.
One angle to play is that if you can buy the computer through your/someone's company, you can claim back the VAT as a business expense, do some homework on this. It made the difference for me; meant I could get the system I wanted for the right price.
Also, if you know anyone trustworthy who lives outside the EU, have it sent to them. You can then unpack it and bring it back to the UK as if you have had it for a while(not that I condone the avoidance of VAT, you understand
One (the only?) word of warning, you pay the shipping costs back to Sager if there is ever a problem, (please correct me if I am wrong). This can be pricy, especially if you have to send back the whole machine as opposed to a single component.
I must add that I am 100% happy with my purchase - no pixel problems, installed the o/s and drivers myself with no issues, etc... The only thing I'll say is that it will probably have a detremential effect on your sleeping patterns. Don't expect many early nights when your new toy arrives
Whatever you decide, keep me posed in this post as I'd be interested to see what you decide/how it goes/how whichever company treats you/etc...
All the best
