Dell XPS1710 + 7900GTX <-> Dell 3007 WFP screen

Hi all,

I would like to know whether an Inspiron XPS1710 powered by one Nvidia 7900 GTX will enable me to plug, as an external monitor, the Dell 3007 WFP 30" monitor and reach its full resolution (2560x1600). I don't play games ; I just do some office work and watch some movie.

Thanks in advance

I had the monitor, but I don't think any of Dell's lappy can use 30" LCD at native resolution. Need dual links. Desktop will do it just fine.

Thanks Calstar. I gave a call to Dell France technical hotline and they said that one 7900 GTX would be fine to connect the 3007 WFP in its native resolution provided that I don't play recent games. Strange that nobody really has the definite answer. Regards.

dual link dvi video cards are required to drive the 30 incher i think.

Galahad : thanks for the helpful link

Chemicalali : indeed but the 7900 GTX seems to have a dual-link dvi port !

even the mobile version (7900GTX Go) ? if so thats cool.

hmm checked. cause im also interested in this. it seems it has only one.

The only laptops that can power the Dell 3007WFP at its native resolution are the Apple MacBook Pros and the last revision of Apple Powerbooks. It doesn't make sense that Dell does not at least ship the XPS M1710 with dual DVI since they're selling a monitor that would be perfect with it.

Hmmm tricky :

Specs for the 7900 GTX : here -> 2560x1600 supported

Specs for the Go 7900 GTX : here -> nothing indicated

The other remark one can make is that for CRT screens the supported resolution is the same for both the Go and the desktop version : 2 048 x 1 536 at 85 Hz

one other thing u have to be careful about is that for a desktop, an external screen is pretty much implied. for a notebook its tricky. it has different specs for its internal and external screens.
for example, my internal monitor and video card can support resolutions up to 1920x1200. but if i connect to an external monitor, no matter what its resolution is, i can only go upto 1024x768.
i think the next gen. 7950 go dual core , if there ever is one, might be able to support WQXGA.

chemicali : you are right. Though, your experience surprises me. I have got an Inspiron 9300 with a 1920x1200 truelife display and an (old) Geforce Go 6800 and a 2405 FPW 24" external monitor.

1) you are right ; in my case both internal and external resolutions are the same (1920x1200) ; here (XPS + 3007 WFP) it's trickier

2) you maybe wrong : I use everyday my 24" plugged into my 9300 and it displays in 1920x1200 resolution. I can even use "dual screen" mode for the 6800 which gives a desktop of 3940x1200 using both the 24" and the laptop's screen. Your video card is more recent than mine so you must be able to achieve that too.

I think you guys are missing the point.. that resolution doesn't matter jack in this case you NEED a dual link DVI.

So if I refer to this test of a XPS1710 with a Go 7900 GTX inside and especially to this picture, I can only see one DVI port so there cannot be any support of the 3007 WFP in 2560x1600, can there ?

Interesting picture. The physical DVI connector is, according to that Wiki article (which has nice connector pictures), a DVI-D dual-link-capable connector. Here, let me post the image.

Compare that to the picture you (sophie) posted:

So if you run a splitter cable from the DVI connector on the laptop it would be the same as dual DVI connectors?
I am not an expert on DVI. But the Wiki article, sophie's comments about what Dell France said, etc. all point to:
The laptop with it's video card can support the 3007 at native resolution. Dell France's comment about not running the latest games means (to me) that running the most graphically-intensive games at the 3007's ultra-high resolution equals you watching a slideshow.

Summary
Point 1: the 3007fp runs natively at WQXGA (2560x1600), which the DVI-D dual-link connector on the laptop is physically designed to handle (and more)
Point 2: we know that the video card can internally handle the display rate
Point 3: Dell France basically said "yes, you can run native WQXGA--just don't try running high-end games at that resolution".

Interesting remark (edit : I mean your link between "my" picture and the wiki's ones), galahad05, thank you. Actually, it looks like the XPS1710 has DVI-D (dual link)...but so does my old Inspiron 9300.

If I may, how can you tell ? The information we are sure of is that the 7900 GTX handles properly the laptop's own screen ie 1920x1200.
^ I had in the past looked at my 6800GO's driver and saw that the card supported pretty high resolutions--above 1920x1200. I am guessing that the 1710's card can handle the same resolutions.

One (of many) ways to tell if your video card can handle the higher resolutions: Look at your video driver. There should be an option to "un-hide unusable video resolutions" or somesuch. Basically, the driver will prevent you from selecting a refresh/resolution that could damage your display. If you uncheck this option, you 'll be able to see all the resolutions/refresh rates that the video driver supports on your card.
