FX7 in for repair (floating bug)

I will start by saying that I am generaly pleased with my FX7. I had some issues in the beginning but it was BF2's issue with the screen refresh rate. After figuring that out, the thing has been rock solid. It is on 24x7 with 2x30 minute down times daily while travelling between home and work. It runs BOINC and Grid.org apps so the CPU is always at 100%. No I do not use the battery, I am always plugged into a power strip. In addition I have been gaming BF2, DDO, and Eve Online and All run great.

But three weeks ago a floating bug appeared.

1> It all started while playing DDO. The FX7 locked up several times. Switched over to BF2, hoping it was a bug from Turbine. Nope, BF2 locked up. Reseated video card, CPU, memory, etc. Eventually found that one of the memory boards was apparently failed. RMA process was initiated. Hypersonic sent out new memory. Installed it and everything was appeared fine.
2> During this and previous weeks I had noticed that the Video card was getting hot and had caused DDO and BF2 to lock up from time to time. I figured I was blocking the airflow and tried elevating the FX7 amongst other things. Well the following weekend after replacing the memory, the video card fan stopped spinning altogether. I managed to squeak thru the weekend by reseating the card allowing the fan to start spinnning again. Had to do this at least every 2 hours of gaming. Again, an RMA was performed and I received a replacement card last friday. Installed the card and all was good to go all night long. played DDO for 4 hours that night without issue.
3> Shut down the lappy and took it into work. At work I went to boot and it said "Operating system not found", UH OH. Since I am in an ISP Engineering department, we had 2.5" SATA external enclosures and spare HD's. I tested both the SATA controller on the lappy and the HD itself. Both appeared to have failed.
4> I called Hypersonic this week, needs new motherboard and HD. They e-mailed me the shipping label and as of this posting it is on day 3 of its week long trek across the US to California. UPS screwed the ship date. Its new scheduled delivery is 07/06/06. Originally was supposed to arrive today or monday.

Having read some of the other postings, I have prepared myself to be without the thing for at least a month.

My questions are: Has anyone else experienced simular floating bug issues? And if so, what were your end results? Did Hypersonic get everything right the first time and was everything covered under waranty?

I received my lappy back this past Tuesday (07/25/2006). Notes in the box stated that the Hard Drive was replaced. However I believe the motherboard might have been also as I had to have my Ethernet MAC changed on our Corp. LAN to the new one. Either way, the things running like it was new again. Boots faster, runs programs better than ever. Best of all, when I installed all my software and games back onto it, BF2 which was a pain in my ars before, fired up just fine without having to make and modify custom video files.

Me very happy once again.

Good deal and glad that everything worked out.

The MAC change is always a good indicator. I knew they replaced the motherboard on my system from talking with them. But I knew for a fact when I plugged it into my home lan and had to change it.

Definitely love MAC filters.

yea, i had some motherboard/video card issues from the day i got my FX7. I sent it in and got it back inside of a week (i was very impressed). the problems seemed to be fixed, but lately i have started having issues with my games framerates randomly dropping and then coming back up. now it crashes and restarts frequently and the screen will just go blank and the lappy will freeze. i have emailed hypersonic several times over the past week and have gotten no response. since i am in hawaii it is difficult to call them cause of the 6 hour time difference but im gonna try tomorrow. this is ticking me off too cause i need this thing.

My last issue with Hypersonic was it for me. The mobo failed, again, and they would not return my calls or e-mail. The lady that answered the phone kept saying support is busy so they will return my call. Its been 6 months now and they still have not called. I finally went with 800tech.com and all issues have been fixed. The heat that these things create is too much for any laptop to control. On AMD, make sure you have Cool & Quite turned on in the bios. Mine was not turned on from the factory.

My other issues had been faulty ram, either do to over heating or the substandard Corsair value select they installed. The LCD invertor went out once as well. But each time the motherboard failed, it appeared to be a hard drive problem as it couldn't find an operating system. The tests came back that the hard drive was fine though. The hard drive doesn't have a fan.

I've only had this thing a year and a half. We don't use it anymore unless we absolutely need it, it just sits on its cooler waiting. I explored the idea of selling it, but there's no way I could get even half the money I paid for it. Most likely not even in a quarter.

The frame rate problem could be something in the system tray. if you run Norton or McAfee, these are most likely the cause.

If you are playing Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO), there is a known issue with their client crashing to the desktop or even freezing the host PC/Laptop up completely. I play it on 2 different machines and have had it happen multiple times (once every 2 weeks).

If your laptop is actually rebooting spontainiously, try to keep an eye on the LED indications (NUM Lock, Scroll Lock, etc.) and see if there is repeatable pattern. These are ussually good indicators of error codes that Hypersonic can use to determine the root issue.

I believe I am in the same boat with you. I think my motherboard is dying once again. Since it is out of warranty, I am not sure I am going to repair it. I have already ordered a Dell Inspiron 1720. Will decide what to do with the FX7 after I get the Dell and play with it.
