Toshiba 5205 S119 - woes

i am shocked to see the pace at which my newly acquired Toshiba 5205 S119 (P4 2.2GHz, 256 MB RAM, NVidia GEForce 56000 64MB Graphics, 40 GB HDD) is operating! its slowness is even comparable to my old P2 433MHz 128MB RAM PC which is overloaded with software and choked out of HDD space!!!! I just don't get it~!

Any advice? Am i missing anything?

oh another thing.. i tried installing GTA (Grand Theft Auto) VIce city just to check out my graphics cards' abilities... I am no gamer by the way.. this wa s just for the sake of the test....
First of all it was a pain to install ... it took long and multiple tries... and then the graphics became distorted during the test run! hmph!

run some benchmarks and post results

Things like pcmark2002 or 3dmark2003 (find them from google search) can be used to benchmark then post your results here.

Any chance your machine has fallen to one of the recent attack programs and become a zombie? Most of the machines being purchased are susceptible to one of several hacks and you don't even have to open an email attachment.

Was it that slow out of the box or has it gotten worse?

you have turned off the xp features right?

The xp gui slows you down a whole bunch right click on start menu to bring up properties and change to classic start menu. Then settings -> control panel -> System then advanced tab then settings then visual effects select the "best performance" one.

Of course you can always put it back the way you want. While you are there turn off the automatic updates feature ... then make sure your antivirus definitions are up to date, think about installing a fireall (zone alarm has a great free version) ... then do the windows update thing.

Send us your benchmark results we can get some comparisons with other users of this machine.
