Constipated!

This is *really* doing my head in!

Does anyone experience disk lag. It processes so much then it pauses like it is constipated but about 1/2 second and then carries on. Doesn't matter what you are doing. Can be a word document, writing a web address or playing Vice City.

The disk *clicks* every 10-15 seconds as if the heads are parked and takes this half second to fire back up.

Has anyone any ideas what this could be. Its the 40Gb disk by the way.

Thanks Guys!

Hmm well I would check all the programs you have running and see if any of them are causing it. I would turn them off one by one till hopefully it stops.

BTW do you have the 80 or 60GB drive?

Just to get this straight, is Uniwill the manufacturer of the mobo? or something else...

Uniwill is pretty much the OEM of the whole laptop alienware puts thier parts in and customizes the case!
Unfortunaly as with all OEM's you cant buy directly from them you have to get through a supplier like Alienware!

Nope, no viruses. I have a clean XP install. The virus software is bang up to date but turned off while I try and sort this prob. I think its a BIOS issue but I could be totally wrong. Hence the post. Wonder if its HT (Hyper-threading). Can you turn this off?

So I am not the only one!!!!!

Its frustraiting that when you use an older Toshiba or HP lappy its fine but on an up2date AW you have a problem.

I've just found a setting in the Device manager for the drive properties->policies

Enable write caching on the disk is ticked. Wonder if this causes the problem??????

I do belive they replace the 16.1in lcd with the hitatchi UXGA model and I think the mother board is custom too from SIS to allow for the upgradeable graphics cards!

i may be wrong.. do you have the wireless a+b+g mini pci card? if so, you might have the stuttering issue that some people have had here. check out this thread.

I second yourbestfriend's recommendation. Before you make matters worse by way of trial and error, look into setting up your wireless card properly. Its entirely possible that these symptoms have nothing to do with your harddrive at all.
