I just purchased a T60 from school so I was wondering what kind of ram i needed

also, I can support up to 2 gb of ram correct?

does anyone have detailed instructions on how to replace the ram?

thanks in advance

It's not too difficult, I think the safest thing is to just follow the instructions in the manual.

The ram you need is so-dimm pc2-5300 (ddr2), like these here. You can support 2gb, yes, not sure if you can support 4gb though.

You can support up to 4GB, but the 2GB DIMMS are stupid expensive.

It's pretty simple. Just make sure you only purchase one 1GB DIMM as it already has 1GM DIMM in it. I thought it had to 512MB and wasted the money on having to send one back to NewEgg as I purchsed two. Cost me extra shipping and a $13 restocking fee. Anyway, the trick is getting the palm rest back on. Just go slow and you should notice that there is a certain angle of reentry if you will when reinstalling it. To take it off there are 4 screws on the bottom that need to come out. Then when removing it be careful not to pull too hard so you don't tear the wires conecting the touchpad and fingerprint scanner off. They didn't leave a lot of slack with the wiring. I got lucky. You should do fine though. Like I said, the tricky part is getting the palm rest back on. Just go slow and it will make sense.

I would recommend that you look through the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

The HMM can give you precise instructions on how to remove and replace any FRU part within your Thinkpad. You can also use it to trouble shoot problems that might arise down the road, after the warranty is up and you have to do it yourself.

Only if you damage the laptop while upgrading it. But the actual upgrade itself does not void the warranty.

Replacing a CRU (Customer Replaceable Unit) will not void your warranty. As posted above, if you damage something along the way, that won't be covered, unless you have the Thinkpad Protection warranty.

CRU parts include, but are not limited to: ram, hard drive, optical drive, etc.

If I bought 2 sticks of this dell ram
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=A0515356

it would work right? Or do I need to get notebook specific ram

Czm2000 – did you buy a thinkpad with 1gb of ram already in it? My thinkpad only has 512 ram in it right now…

so does anyone know if that ram will work?
This is the exact RAM I bought http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820208037

It had a very good user rating and was inexpensive. So I cross referenced this Part with the Transcend website and it confirmed that it is compatible with the T60. So I went with it and it has worked great.

so the ram from dell does work or no it doesnt?
haha

I can only confirm the RAM I tried works. I can't confirm the Dell as I have not tried it. As stated I used the Transcend. In theory Dell RAM should work, but RAM can be tricky. Sometimes certain systems are less accpeting of different types of RAM. That's why I confirmed compatability with the Transcend website prior to my purchase. Hopefully someone who has tried the Dell memory in their T60 can chime in with a solid answer for you.

I talked with the dell guys and they said that the ram I had before wouldn’t fit. I should use laptop/desktop ram right?

You can not use Desktop RAM in a laptop. You will need 200 PIN laptop RAM.
