Windows Vista - Page 2

I ran the Beta 2 on my laptop (well, technically, it's still there) and it wasn't too bad at all. A little slow here and there and programs would still exhibit instability. It's nice to play around with but nothing I'd use full time.

I heard the new build out in the RC tree is actually VERY good. I'm talking better performance than WinXP on a decently specc'd machine (yeah, don't ask me how that's possible, but several people have commented on this) and is many times more stable than the Beta 2 release. I'm going to see if I can give the new build a whirl.

you mean like to download and use from the hard drive you're repartitioning?

if so, then no. I haven't done this but one time, with partition magic, and frankly it didn't work very well, ended up borking my partition table, and I had to reformat and reinstall windows. but if I remember correctly it ran off the CD.

maybe not. Like I said I dont know for sure, I only did it once, and that was a couple of years ago. I could be wrong.

Also you could make a disk image, reformat, then use the windows CD to repartition you HDD and reinstall from the image. Resizing would be easier if it will run off the partition you're resizing, I just dont think it will.

Let someone confirm before you give up hope.

no, not necesarily. You could store it on an external drive. or move it over a network to another box's hdd. or use an online storage solution like iBackup or Godaddys 'Online File Folder'. If none of those are available for you then yeah you'd be left with very few options.

and I forgot that, I backed up all my files, and the F@@king restore, doesnt restore!

This is a total re-edit of a long thing I wrote and decided was not what you needed.

Basically, troubles with Vista result from Vista's very different boot system, which does not use NTLDR or boot.ini, and its different use of device drivers. When a Vista install goes wrong, it does indeed wipe out Sys Restore's effectiveness, plus it seems to eat up most of your original XP system.

Actually almost everything is still there. Your files, and even your boot files, are still there. The problem is in accessing them again, which won't take you too long, and secondly in getting your XP working properly again—which should happen, but might not.

The most knowledgable stuff I've seen resulted from Googling the two incompatibles [+Vista +NTLDR] or [+Vista +boot.ini], which immediately leads you to discussions about the new boot system, and maybe to some better help than I can offer.

I think Vista was originally leaked out as an alpha that had been intended for ongoing M$ work. Then M$ scrambled to make it a bit more palatable for a public it was not ready for—and who were not ready for it.

You yourself did nothing wrong, and you have a LOT of company.

no problem. unfortunately installing beta software carries some risk of these kinds of problems.

yeah, I did since I couldnt find any free (and you dont need to use a CD) partition Software, so I chose the option to Upgrade and what I got was the picture in post number 1 so I decided to go back to Windows XP (and lost all my files doing that) and when I restored all my files and settings (in XP), natrually, it didnt work.

btw: I did it on my desktop, not my laptop
