Black Screen

I bought a Satellite 5100 a year and a half ago and i did not have any problem up to this point with it .. My problem is that one day the bottom right part of my screen began to blink so i restarted my computer just to see, and when it started back the screen was black. I can see a little bit if i put a bright light in front of my screen but its like if there was not enough power to push the colors to the screen. I can use another screen as a secondary so i dont beleive that the problem is my video card ... but im no expert ...

Is there someone who happened to have the same problem or know what it is ?

Thanks a lot !!

Your light source burnt out or something. Cause its an actual light that "lights" up the screen. Its a little light bulb inside the screen cover. I really doubt that you will be able to get that fixed by Toshiba. You may want to try ebay, and buy one yourself. Sadly I looked at ebay, and found none. I am thinking you have to replace the hole screen, but I maybe wrong. What I would do is contact Toshiba and see if they would be able to give the part number, and if you can order it. (800) 457-7777. Good luck!!!

I took apart my very very old laptop, and naturally I wanted to see what was in the screen. And thats how I found out. I hope the bulb is all you have to change.

black screen

Your problem is that you have a bad inverter. It's an easy fix for any technician.

Techman,

I think I have the same problem as Rod on a 2 yr/old Toshiba Satellite 1805-S274. The screen is so dark, I can't see the mouse to navigate. I can use it with an external monitor. Hitting the Fn + F5 keys doesn't resolve problem. However, if I rapidly and repeatedly press the screen on/off button (the one that turns off the screen when you close the cover), the screen will momentarily flicker and at times stay on and look normal for a couple of seconds. What is the inverter and how costly is the repair?

Thanks,

JGAR

Jgar - 1805

Toshiba 1805 laptops are known to have this problem. You can't just go buy an inverter. It's the pcb that powers the flourescent tubes in your lcd. It converts the digital voltage back to analog. It's not something for an inexperienced person to fool with. The average voltage leaving the inverter is around 400-600V. Take it to an authorized repair center or call Toshiba and they'll send you in the right direction.

I had mine go out shortly after replacing the screen on my 1805-S274. But I was able to find one on ebay and it was a snap to put in.
