DVD/CD-RW drive issue.

A couple days ago after I did nothing that I can think of that would have made my computer do anything problematic, my DVD/CD-RW drive stopped working. I think my case feels a bit loose in that area, but I was wondering if there's anything that someone could help me with before I have to send this thing back for more work done to it. I've rebooted multiple times, and every now and then the CD drive will make the whirring noise it always did during the booting process, but no such usable luck. It doesn't show up anywhere. It still pops out when I press the button and the light flashes, and it sounds like it's reading the CD when I pop it in, but nothing else happens. If anyone has any clue what I can do about that, I'd be very grateful. Last time I got it repaired, it took four months in the middle of a semester of college and a campaign for public office... Not very fun doing either without my baby...

Thanks for the help. :-)

Try physically removing the unit and then "slamming" it back it. Not real hard -- but firmly to insure that it is seated properly.

How exactly would I go about removing the unit? I'm not seeing any screws that look like they're dedicated to it...

It's in the User's manual (Page 6-4) which can be downloaded here: http://www.eurocom.com/support/manua...Note_D870P.pdf

Here is an extract from that page:
1. Shut the computer down and remove the battery (see “Battery Removal”
on page 6 - 3).
2. Remove screws - . (This is the panel with the smallest "memory" fan)
3. Carefully lift up the memory socket cover (a fan cable is still attached to
the mainboard and you can either disconnect it or leave it attached).
4. Use a screwdriver to carefully push the CD/DVD device assembly out of
the computer at point . (Located just above the memory you should see part of the CD/DVD drive) Gently push it out using a blunt "probe" such as a chop stick.

Downloading the manual and looking at the actual pictures is recommended.

Much wootage. Thanks Omaha. It appears that when it last went to the warranty folks, they decided they didn't like using all the screws that came with my computer... so they lost one... and the one they decided to lose was the one that held the cd drive in place... Easy mistake to make... I never would have noticed that screw held the cd drive in too unless I had taken it out. Thanks. :-)
