Hp Nc6000?

I was wondering why there is so little discussion of the HP NC6000.

It seems to have nice stats and even nicer reviews.

HP NC6000
http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/Mid...&AirTime=False

CPU: P-M 1.6
Video: 9600 w/64mb
ram: 1024gb ddr 333mhz (pc2700)
HD: 40gb 5400rpm
Screen: 14.1 sxga+
Battery: 6.5hr (optional 2nd battery in multibay for 13hr)
Optical: DVD/CDRW
Warrenty: 3 yrs parts & labor
NIC gigabit 10/100/1000
wireless: 802.11g
Pointer: both touchpad and stick
Sound: somewhere between a 500xl and a 1557. Decent sound but lacking in bass.
Weight: 5.5lbs
misc: solid build quality. Does not run hot. USB2.0 ports. Runs apps ~10% faster the similar IBM and gateway models. Very long list of optional bits and pieces.

Cost: 2243.00 as above (base price 1549.00)

CNET.COM rated 8.1 (editors choice dec 22, 2003)

A fast, long-running road machine with top-notch security, the nc6000 is a good choice for the mobile professional.
The good: Excellent performance; good battery; nice keyboard; strong security option.
The bad: No FireWire port; no 1.7GHz Pentium M option.
similarly equipped listed from 1940 to 2200

-----------------

I need a newer laptop (old toshiba is just too slow and battery life is just too short). I am looking for a:
1. VERY high endurance laptop. By that I mean I want a laptop that can run a very long time on batteries alone. 4+ hours
2. Gaming capable. I enjoy video games and want to play Call of Duty (etc) without a cord. So 64mb or better m10 is the minimum.
3. Reasonable cost. I do not want to spend much more then 2grand and would prefer to spend less.
4. I need to have enough horsepower to compile fairly complex projects and do imaging work.

I am VERY tempted by the Emachines 6805. I just love that processor and the speed it would allow me to do my work. But, I am put off by it's battery life. 3 hours is nicer then the p4 laptops, but not as long as a centrino.
I am not interested in any p4 based laptop. They are more "luggables" then laptops in my mind.
I have thought about the 505XL, but I do not like it's screen. I hate how it handles smaller resolutions with just huge amounts of black space. I thought about the 1557. It resizes the image to fit to the screen but has horrible sound and is of questionable build quality. More importantly it is just so-so on batteries compared to other centrinos.

Suggestions or thoughts?

Hi Bjorn,
I'm also buying a new laptop with similar requirements as yours (minus Call of Duty My choices are IBM T41 and HP zt3000 (see my other post). I didn't see the notebook u mention in any big electronic stores(CompUSA, CC, etc) Have you seen one yourself?
Do you mind explaining "Runs apps ~10% faster the similar IBM and gateway models. " to me? I'm not challenging you but I would like to see why there is a 10% performance gain.

Just configure a one from your link. When I choose SXGA+ monitor, it says
Selecting this item will extend your estimated ship date by 14 days.
Sigh~~ too bad I don't have enough time to wait.

I got that from CNET.com by comparing similar models from the other mfg's and looking at their test scores. The HP was around 10% faster.
Not very scientific, I know. But I've learned similar sounding parts don't always equate to similar performance, so I always check this out.

I have not seen the HP NC6000 in any major store. CNET.com (and probably pricegrabber.com) lists some stores that do carry it. Perhaps one local to you will have it in stock and save you the waiting period.

I looking at the nc6000 also, ordered one in fact. As soon as I get it (in a month or two ) I'll post a complete review. The way (I think) that CNET measures portable speed is by running mobile mark on batteries and since the HP gets better battery performance for the same amount of power, it has a higher score (don't quote me on this).

Also, HP only sells the much slower 32 mb radeon 9600 models to resellers and those models only have XGA screens. THere is no way around it, if you want the SXGA+ you have to wait it out (they are on backorder ).

Yeah I was pretty annoyed at that as well. I would love to go into Fry's or Bestbuy and jut pick up a fully loaded one.
