Welcome to the forums!

The 1710 has pretty much the same chasis as the Gen2 however, the 1710 now come with dual core processors and a faster video card(7900 compared to the 6800 Ultras). Everything else is pretty much the same.

XPS Gen2(Also know as the M170) - Single core processor, max graphics card is 7800GTX.

XPS M1710 - Dual core processor, max graphics card is a 7900GTX. Upgradable to Merom, and possibly DirrectX 10.

Oh...also, 1710 has Xpresscard tech instead of PCMCIA, supports a different set of camera-cards instead of just SD, has a slightly brighter screen, and different cosmetic effects...however, those are only secondary to the things Eagle mentioned...

And another difference, the M170 has a mini pci slot, whereas the M1710 has a mini pci EXPRESS slot. (just means it has a different form factor for the internal wireless card.)

It also has a D-dock. What is important about the D-dock is theat you will in the future be able to use desktop Graphics card with the laptop while docked.

Is that true? I was under the assumption that graphics through docking technology suffered some kind of bottle neck?

Yeah, it does. That is complete speculation, and I am willing to bet you will never see such a thing
