To get this thread back on topic.

WAIT for the new CPU's... wait until the 2nd wave comes out if you can as the FSB is going to be bumped up to 800mhz

I'm going to go completely against this and say DON'T wait for the second wave of merom. It's about a year away, and by then there'll be something else to wait for. Why do people always get stuck in this "I'm gonna wait until my computer is furterproof" attitude?? There is no such thing as a 'futureproof' pc, so buy when you want to

I completely agree.

Yeah, won't wait a year, but the my point is how far away is the first merom, and is it worth the wait? and will dell be putting them into there xps line. Because if it's only a month away, it would seem to be smarter to wait it out.

if you arent willing to put a chip in yourself, then yes wait the month for merom

not worth the wait

I'd order now. The M1710 is Merom compatible, so even if you decide to upgrade you'll be okay. Just buy the Merom chip and sell your old one. Besides, based on the price of the 2.33GHz chip, I wouldn't be surprised if Dell offered Merom as an upgrade at a high price instead of just integrating it into the laptop line. At least initially that is.

I would wait a month - it seems Dell is getting ready to put the T7600 into the M1710 on day one (BIOS upgrades, WinXP64 drivers, etc.). The price of the 2.33GHz Merom is the same as for the 2.16GHz Yonay today, so you get about 30% more power for the money, plus a nice Vista-capable 64bit system.

Waiting for Merom gen2? Well, that *will* be a nice platform, but unfortunately it will require a new chipset (Santa Rosa), and thus a new revision of the XPS - could take a few months after release (like with Yonah!).

So: wait for Merom, it's only a month or two.

I said wait IF you can for the second wave.... Meaning if you've got something to use now, use it. New platforms for Vista will see all kinds of improvements besides the FSB speed being upped.

Waiting for the first wave is a no brainer... You'd be a fool to buy today when it's only a month or so away from the release date of the new Core Duo 2's.

There's never really a "good" time to buy a computer. Technology changes so rapidly you're obsolete before you know it. I bought my 9300 six months ago and look what's happened. It's yesterday's news. The 6800 Go is one of the worst cards around, and the Pentium M has been put out to pasture. A year ago, this would have been a good laptop. Now, it's collecting dust.

My advice is if you want a laptop, go for it. You can't keep waiting for fear of something better right around the corner. I'll probably get a new laptop next year to replace my 9300. Like many, I'm not happy when something new comes out, but we all have to live with it in the ever changing world of computers.

Hey, if automobile technology changed as fast, we'd have been in flying cars a long time ago!

That's the exact reason you'd be a fool to buy today when it's only a month or so away from the release date of the new Core Duo 2's.

You're right about things changing, but wrong on buying something today vs waiting a month or so to get something 20-30% faster.

If I knew something a lot better was a month away, I'd wait for sure. Maybe you should wait a month or so and see what happens.

Well thanx guys for all the input I think my best bet is to wait. Yeah it might be alittle more but the new chip seems a lot better, plus in the next couple of weeks we should know alittle bit more about whats to come, or atleast I hope.

, we already know more now than a few weeks ago (search the forum for merom and see). Engineering samples are plentiful it seems, and people will soon get their first meroms.

While it's never a perfect time to buy, there are better times than others. You can get better deals on slightly older technology, but it will become obsolete faster. It just comes down to the buyer.
