Seagate Momentus 60GB 7200rpm clicking normal? Click...click.....*going crazy* - Page 2

I was in a similar situation. The original HD is a Seagate 80GB 5400RPM. It was noisy and grindy. Then Dell sent me a Toshiba HD 80B 5400RPM but it was worse than the first one. After my 2nd complaint, Dell sent me a clean Hitachi HD 80GB 7200RPM without Dell Image (good point, save time for both Dell and me). This one is the worst but I don't want to return a more expensive HD. Dell is really wise.

It is noisier. However, it does not make clicking sound in idle state of HD as the Seagate HD and the Toshiba HD. what's about yours? is it fine?

I don't know yet. I'm in London right now and not back in the US until Monday evening. My wife received the drive though. I'll let you know probably Tuesday

i imagine your definition of noisy may vary to most then. all hd's make some noise. you cant expect -0- noise. id just stick with the 7200.

hell if you wanna trade i have a 60gb 5400 seagate thats near silent in my macbook.

I have used both Hitachi & Seagate 7200rpm HDD.

In my opinion, the Seagate drives are quiter while the Hitachi ones are noisy (it's after I have set the Hitachi drives to "silent" mode). But that's just my opinion.

Don't tell me that my Hitachi drives are faulty because I have got 3 (1 ATA-100 & 2 SATA) of them & they are bought at different times & all are noisy with those "clicking" sounds.

And in case you're wondering why I still go with the Hitachi, the reason is that it is cheaper than Seagate....

I don't mind the "noise." Trust me, I have some really old noisy desktop drives. Noise I can take. It's the harsh, random CLICKS that are driving me nuts. None of my drives have ever done that before. This Seagate didn't do it when I got the drive, so I know it's not normal. Anyway, should be a moot point soon since I'll be popping in the new Hitachin 80GB Monday night.

William, I got my m1210 two days ago with the 60gb 7200rpm sata drive and it does exactly the kind of clicking you mentioned. Not only does it click, I also often hear what sounds like something loose inside vibrating when installing apps. It drives me nuts.

Yuck. I'd do a hardware chat with Dell and get a new one. Pop it out (4 easy screws) and see if it's a Seagate. Probably is.

Just go to <My Computer>, right-click on <Local Disk (C)>, then select <Properties> & <Hardware> & you'll be able to see what you have. Names starting with HTS is Hitachi & ST is Seagate.

Surprise! It's a Hitachi HTS721060G9SA00.

Normally I don't fret over HD noises. But this one I got didn't start well. When UPS delivered handed to me the box was luke warm and so was the laptop inside. Being as impatient as I am, I booted it up before it cooled down. Low and behold it hang up at the XP MCE initializing screen where it says "personalizing your desktop".

Hopefully your 80GB will be fine. Please report back.

You can go to BIOS & set your HDD to "silent" mode & see if it helps.... Good luck.

Sorry to hear yours has problems. Are you sure your MCE freeze is the hard drive though? I'll let you know how my new drive goes when I get back home.

Another possible causage

Very often we can see a laptop hard drive making the clicking sound because of not enough power to run it (it could be either lower voltage or lower current than what the hard drive requires).

This happens very often on those "portable removable storage" devices.

Also that the 7200rpm HD requires higher current than common 5400rpm and 4200rpm HD, so check ur motherboard voltage supply and current readings to make sure every requirements are met.

Well, that may be possible jayjy, but I'll be darned if I'm messing around checking voltages etc on my new system. Anyway, I got the 80GB Hitachi 7200rpm and up and running and it works great.

Congrats. Glad you received a good replacement.

Yep, thanks. The new Hitachi is noticeably quicker than the Seagate too, especially, in of all things, Diablo 2. The "skipping/caching" the Seagate did is no longer there in the Hitachi. Same install/software too. I like it!
