Watching movies, choppy

I may have posted this before I'm not sure, I did look for a thread that would address this to no avail. Anyways to the point. I watch dvd's on my e1705 from time to time and have found about half way through the movie or even if laptop had been on awhile then I watch a movie, it tends to skip so fast, almost choppy. I seem to recall talking to dell about this but my memory is crap maybe I just thought about calling them. Has anyone had this problem? Can anyone suggest any fixes before I attempt the difficult task of getting dell to figure it out? I havent really had many issues outside of software with this machine so I am happy to this point. Also just a note, I dont use temp. software I was waiting for a program I found on this forum to be updated to work with my system, but since I can play FEAR, EVE, and BF2 faster and better than my antiquated pc I have been content.

Edit: oh and dont say my dvd is dirty, I usually buy a new dvd for the weekends I work and watch it during down time so its not the dvd's
Added 10 seconds after post: dvd's run better on my media direct than they do on my media center.

Download Notebook Hardware Control and set the CPU setting to Max. Performance and/or Dynamic Switching.

(My guess is that it's stuck in low-power mode).

Also try enabling hardware acceleration or the like in your dvd program.

Yup. the two posts above = 90+ % of the causes of video stuttering.

Also you might want to check out the version of the codec your using.

The 9x.xx series drivers cause that problem for me. 84.56 drivers correct the problem.

Hmmm, I have the stuttering as well on 91.33. But on 84.56, I get only 256 color video (multiple codecs). I only get the stuttering on HD video,though....hmmm

it stutters in media direct, which uses power dvd, it was already enabled. no problems in media player, however to use it i have to log into xp, using the media direct button uses less power.

make sure DMA is enabled on the dvd drive, go to the system control panel, then the hardware tab, device manager.

Under IDE/ATAPI controllers, go to secondary IDE channel and verify under advnaced settings that Device 0 is Ultra DMA mode 2
if it is not try changing the transfer mode to use DMA if avaliable if its set to use PIO, if it still wont change try uninstalling the INTEL R 82801 GBM/GHM IDE controller (right click and uninstall) and then reboot and see if its fixed, I have seen this issue where I get stuttering because it cant read fast enough off the drive and also it causes super high CPU usage when using PIO mode instead of DMA.

yeah, the DMA issue is what was wrong with my DVD drive. Skipped like hell... Read software like Sh!#. Went into the device manager and it was set to PIO mode like discussed above.

thank you so much. now all i need to do is watch lots of movies to decide which program is better, media player, power dvd, or the mediadirect button. so far it seams the mediadirect is better, i will test further.

I like anything that can use the nvidia pure video codec. I'm using cyberlink powerdvd 7 right now because of that & the dolby headphone sound

I'm too lazy to mess with overlays

I tried nvidia purevideo but found pans and zooms to studder and not transition smoothly. Anyone else notice this?

hmm does your play button work in powerdvd 7?...Everything seems to work except pause and play...I suspect I'll end up having to tamper in the powerdvd folder...

ok through further testing (watching movies and still having issues) i have determined it is a heat issue related to the dvd drive. yes the fix mentioned above allows me to watch movies on media player and the media center (i think power dvd) which is also used with media direct. after about an hour of the disk spinning i am getting the skip. there is no heat sink for the dvd drive (duh) so i running the fans wont help, also the laptop cooler i have really only focuses on the ram sticks. so i guess i want to know if anyone is having this problem or not and what drive you have in your system. i have a sony dvd+rw dw-q58a for your reference. this would be something you would see on most laptops i assume that have this paticular drive. i am considering nec maybe but i will wait for feedback from this very educated community
