The ABS G1 Mayhem Journal

Thread Starter
since so many people seem to be interested in ABS and who/what they are, i thought i might start a little journal of my experience with them so you might be able to see first hand how your experience might be when dealing with them. i'll start with a short version of my story...

had a dell 5150
sold to work for new guy
bought dell 8600 - 1.5M/512 ram/128 ati/dvd burner/40 gig hd/wsxga: around 1650 or so.
saw abs had some great deals.
ordered a g1 - 3.06 p4 w/ht/gig of ram/128 at/cd/dvd combo/wxga/60 gig hd: almost 1700 on the nose.

so i have these two computers and i've been playing around with both of them. i won't even bother giving you hardware comparisons...it's pretty obvious to me that the g1 will wipe the floor with the dell.

here are some of my first impressions.

day1: the abs came in 7 business days. customer service was friendly and efficient when i ordered. i kept checking the site daily to see the little 8 step thing and where it was. i spent the entire time on step 3, and then, monday, i was all of a sudden at step 8 and the thing was shipped. pretty cool, but it made me wonder if they burned it in as they said.

the machine was packed very well. it came in the standard brown "i am a computer from a foreign country" packaging. nothing special about it.

for some reason, i got that software that moves everything from one computer to another. i could have sworn i checked the box that said i didn't want it, but i got it anyway. anybody want it?

upon first appearance, the machine looks pretty cool. looks a little like a widescreen i-book. it's all silver. there are two fans on the bottom and one on the side. the thing looks and feels like it could probably control a nuclear reactor. it's a solid machine from the outside.

the keyboard feels good, but strange. i guess i only think it's different because all of the laptops that i have used have the keyboards a little bit sunken in. i don't know any other way to explain it other than that. however...i have to admit that they keys feel a little...loose? that's the best way to describe it...

turning it on sounds like a jet fighter. it's pretty loud.

boot didn't take long. it popped up into windows, and screen looks awesome. it's really bright and and is very easy to look at. everything looks nice and crisp. looks like abs had burnt things in. noticed that they left their wireless test settings in there.

i am HIGHLY disappointed with the synaptics touchpad. it really feels pretty cheap, and the cursor moves in a somewhat jerky manner once you start slowing down to hover over something you want to click on. i even played the settings and it still doesn't feel right. the buttons are very tight and require you to press down on harder than usual.

wireless adapater found my network right away after i typed in the correct settings, and i was ready to go.

cd/dvd player is pretty loud...feels a little...loose. i keep using the word loose, and i'm not sure if this is the right word or not. i used the word with the keyboard too. it's a feeling like it MAY be something cheap, or it may be because i'm just used to a different type of laptop. i'm definitely willing to admit that this is probably the case.

this computer runs extra special hot. this was to be expected what with the processor, the card, and the hard drive being as quick as they are. the palm rest on the left side of the keyboard is hotter than the right side, and the bottom...if you let it rest on bare skin for any extended amount of time, i am quite sure you would have a nice, uncomfortable red mark there.

so far so good....until i decide i want to install xp pro on it. i begin to install it, and i counted three times that the drive made kind of a quick, sleight grinding sound...like the disk was brushing up against something inside. it's definitely not the disk because i've installed it on several different machines without a problem. but, it didn't seem to affect the install.

everything went smoothly until i got to the wireless lan driver, which...uhhh...isn't on the utility driver CD (it comes with a CD with all of the drivers on it). there are two folders in the wireless lan driver folder, and one of them is empty. the other one is for a broadcom wireless lan driver. hmmm....so i dropped a pm to the ABS guys that post on here in hopes that i might get that resolved. i have a functional computer now, but i have an unfunctional wireless adapater.

finally, they say the computer comes with some kind of ABS computer manual. i did not receive that either, though i did receive all of the proof-of-purchases and everything for the processor, ram, and then all of the drivers and such.

i'm being very objective about this experience because i am really curious as to what ABS is going to do. i've read LOTS of good things, and i've witnessed them do some stuff here that is above and beyond the typical company that sells computers. i'm not unhappy right now....but i'm not thrilled to death.

how am i writing this to you? i'm writing on the dell 8600 that i have here as well. it might not be as fast, but it's definitely been much easier to get working right out of the box. it's annoying me though because i haven't re-configured it yet (i.e. reinstalled clean XP on it, etc.). i'm using the factory set up, and MAN OH MAN it's slow to respond on just about everything. i don't know what they do to these poor things at the factory to get them to run this slow. there is SO much pure garbage on here that a basic user could be overwhelmed. AOL stuff...earthlink stuff...mcafee updates that sqwak at you, XP tours, updates, etc....god...

however, it's quiet. i can barely tell it's on. it's a little warm on the bottom, but infinitely cooler than the g1. battery life is really great, naturally. the construction definitely feels more together. however, the little track stick is completely useless, and the buttons that are supposed to work with it feel like you're pressing down on a sponge. and there's an annoying twanging sound that the keyboard makes when i hit keys over on the left side. it's very sleight, but once you notice it, it starts getting to you.

alright ABS...time to step up. i'm no whiner, and i'm ready to work with you guys on getting this thing right. to summarize:
- i need the correct wireless LAN driver.
- the mystery of the missing ABS manual pack needs to be solved. does this computer come with it?
- i don't believe i ordered the transfer software, but i have it here. would you like it back? you don't have to take anything off my price, as i feel like i got a pretty solid deal.
- if the touchpad normally as strange as i've described, i would recommend that you should perhaps think about seeing if you can get the manufacturer (uniwill) to do something about it. though i don't see myself using it much, it's still nice to know that you have a solid piece of hardware in case it's needed.

looking forward to chatting with you guys!

.andrew.

Thanks for the review. Glad to see some more info on the G1. Although I think the ODM for the G1 (A258SA0) is Uniwill not Winstron. If so, you can get the wireless driver from here.
Keep us updated.

Yay First Post...

Yeah, the pictures (if thats anything to go by) UniWill are the ODM.

Ive been looking at this laptop for a while (last week or so)... so does it really feel cheap .andrew.? I ask because to find a machine with similar specs/price is pretty hard to come by here in OZ! Alienware, Sager and Voodoo dont sell their laptops here my choices are, well, limited.

Have you run any FPS to see how it handles it?

day 2: too early for response from customer service, who is in on the west coast, and therefore 3 hours behind me. no problem...

thanks for the correction about the motherboard...i did indeed visit the uniwill site last night and not the wistron. i'm not sure why i said wistron. i was getting ready for bed, so i apologize for that mistake. i did download the uniwill drivers, and that did no good.

as for the other post, i completely agree with you. you simply cannot find another computer with similar specs at this price. actually, now you probably can because the special is over, but ABS seems very competitive.

it is only my opinion that it feels a little less quality...cheap is probably too strong of a word. again, i stress that it might just be because i'm used to a particular brand of laptop (dell). i believe that dells have exceptional build quality. note that i also said that that dell 8600 that i also have right now is not without fault. you can view it like cars...they all just "feel" different on the inside when you drive them. there's a certain amount of opinion involved in what feels better to you.

no, i've not run any programs on it yet. i will do that tonight and i will keep everything posted here. the plan is to keep posting here over a two week period everyday and document my experience as it happens.

i want to be really fair in this whole thing. i have two computers right now, and one of them is definitely going to go back. there is no comparison hardware-wise (read the post), but hardware isn't necessarily everything to me. you can have the greatest stuff in the world, and if you can't get it to work right or the way you want it to, then it's worthless.

oh yes, and an addition to my post from last night. i went to the ABS site to see if i could find the drivers as well. they have the potential for a nice, easily navigable driver finding system, but it is not updated for the G1. while not that big of a deal to me (we're all most likely smart enough to figure out the stuff we have and find drivers for it ourselves) this could be a problem with a less educated user base.

quick edit: no, i have no run any programs on it yet, but i will begin that process tonight. games and music stuff (pro-tools, reason, acid, soundforge, etc.) are my main testing points. those are the things that i NEED to have work solidly on this thing.

off to work i go...

day 2 (continued): score 1 for notebookforums user base. i just got the driver from telemekhos as he stated he would do.

this is a problem that could have been solved immediately by having an updated driver listing on the ABS site. there's my first and foremost suggestion to ABS...

just realized something else...i didn't receive the games that they said are supposed to come packaged with the system...hmmm.

still waiting for customer service...

day 2 (continued): customer service did indeed respond below and through PM...offered to ship everything out immediately with customer number. nice job on answering the issue with what's going on with the drivers, and what you're doing to remedy that.

big bonus for having people that are able/willing to talk to you through this medium. it helps VERY much.

nice job, ABS...

I have the Atheros Driver

Andrew,
i got a G1 on Monday night and had the exact same problem with the WLAN. I only got a cd that had the broadcom utility. Anyways, i have the file and it is approx 8mb. If you want me to email it just send me the address where you can accept a larger attachment. Once installed it worked great, but it took tech support 6 hours to call me back after they finally opened at 11:30 EST. I also did not get an ABS manual, but of course i forgot to tell the tech on tuesday since i was so excited to get the WLAN working. Send me your email via post/pm and ill forward you the driver.

Hi Telemekhos and .Andrew.,

Thanks for the feedback regarding the G1 and the valuable insight you are providing to other members of this forum. I have forwarded your initial impressions to our notebook engineer. Regarding the WLAN driver, ABS will be launching a new notebook support site next week where we will be posting FAQs, drivers, and bulletins related to notebook support. I will post up a link to that section of our website as soon as it is ready. In the meantime, please use the Atheros driver from Engenius for the 802.11G card.

I am currently working with our shipping department to address the missing ABS binder issue. We are working hard to improve our support and our products. Thanks again for giving us your feedback!

Hi
i did not want my post to sound totally negative, i really do think the G1 is an excellent machine and when i did talk to tech support the tech was competent and worked through the issue with me. I was wondering if ABS.com could tell me the best way to get my Manual/Binder since it was not bundled with the system.
thanks,

day 2 (end of day): i have to say...wow...this machine is extremely powerful.

extremely. powerful.

1. dual monitors. it happily sat and played a DVD while i played call of duty. it sputtered a LITTLE bit, but not bad.

2. playing call of duty by itself, completely maxed out on all details...it played it PERFECTLY. i don't even know what to say...

the wireless drivers i got today worked great.

everything is set up the way i want it. i am really impressed...however...

here's my really large concern. this thing heats up like i have never, ever felt anything heat up before. i am not overclocking at all. i mentioned the left side of the of the palm rest running hot before...you can't feasibly rest your hand on it now without feeling really uncomfortable. nor could you put it in your lap if you wanted to. i am running it on my desk now raised up on a stand, and it's SOOOO hot!

this might be a dealbreaker, and i HATE to say that because i really like the machine and everything about it...

we'll see though....i've still got quite a bit of time to go and quite a few more things i want to do with it.

abs customer service has been flawless so far on contacting me...

.andrew.

considering the heat issues, is there any related stability issues?

or should you tell me to be patient and wait for more of your journal :P

What kinda of ramp do you have the G1 sitting on? I've been looking at the lapramp (www.lapramp.com.au - australian product). I do remember seeing a ramp that has fans in the bottom of it to help move the heat...I should go look through my mags to see if I can find it - might help your heat problem

to answer your question, eudaemons:

i played CoD for about an hour, and it didn't SEEM to have any stability problems. however, it was REALLY hot...

i just have my laptop on an iCurve. there are two fans on the bottom and an opening out on the side near the processor that allows for dissapation. so, the fans on the bottom are able to blow freely.

when all of the fans are on...it's pretty loud!

that's about it.

something else i noticed...battery life is indeed very short. doing regular stuff, you'll get about an hour and half out of it.

i'm figuring out that this is an EXTREMELY portable desktop system rather than a laptop. if you plan on taking this anywhere with you, you will need to take the power supply with you for sure. otherwise, you are simply out of luck. by the way, even the power supply has a fan in it! it's kind of crazy...

this weekend is going to be the kicker for me. i do a great deal with audio, and i take my system with me. i will be doing several tests concerning battery life while doing recording. plus, it will be powering something called an mbox, which is a portable recording unit that allows you to plug guitars, mics, etc. into it. i'm curious to see how adverse of an effect that has on batteries...

.a.
Extremely portable desktop sums up the G1. You're hooked to the powercord like Chang was to Eng (the original Siamese twins). However, if you're willing to put up with a plugged in notebook you'll have a system that kicks some major booty.
I've had my G1 now since January 14th (don't know if that's the longest of anyone on this board, but could be) and have gotten very acclimated to the power cord. I mean, face it, if you're using a notebook to game with..you're plugging in a plethora of gadgets anyway (speakers/headphones, mouse, joystick, etc) so what's one more plug?
It is a hot sumbitch though.

one more observation

My opinion is the battery life on the G1 serves as a personal reminder letting you know that "You've been playing COD for 1 1/2 hours, it's time to move on and do something productive".
I think saving the world from fascists IS productive...
Hey XSternMinator... its good to see your not dead like DeltaWalker had reported:P

Oh and I agree about saving the world from fascists being productive. Down with fascist scum!

X, your posthumous replies are well-received. I knew you were good in life, but posting to the board whiltst the worms are eating your toes tops it all.
