19 or 20'' LCD, widescreen?

Thread Starter
It seems like 19/20'' LCD monitors have suddenly dropped in price and I'd like to pick up one. I'm looking for a basic, reliable, LCD that can be used for moderate gaming but mostly for multi-tasking (multiple windows visible on the desktop). I don't quite understand some of the specs and would appreciate some help.

Is the screen real estate of a 19'' LCD the same as a 19'' CRT? Some advertisements imply or state otherwise.

Would I notice the difference between a 19 and 20'' LCD?

This is subjective, but will a 19'' widescreen be annoyingly too short?

Thanks

The LCD has more screen space than the CRT

I doubt it, 19" is a pretty big screen

Right now there's a great deal on this acer 20" monitor, going for $240:

dell has a pretty sweet deal on the ultrasharp 19" lcd (1907fp). price normally is $309 on sale for $247. it is consistently rated as one of the best 19" lcds out there.

Whatever you do, though, just remember one basic thing about LCD monitors: THEY CAN BURN IN. I have a couple of Dell LCD displays at work, and after leaving them sitting idle over a weekend with power saving and screensavers disabled (because they interfere with D3D tests that I work on), I came back the next Monday to find some of the pixels from the wallpaper image burned in. Brand new LCDs, damaged, just like that. *sigh*

(I have no reason to believe that Dell flat-panels are any better or worse than any other brand about this, so this isn't a diss on the Dell displays. I used them as an example because they're what I have.)

My recommendation: Use the monitor power saving settings to let the monitor blank after time, or a screensaver to keep the image changing. Just don't do what I did and leave both turned off, and the monitor turned on....

Further note about LCD "image persistance" aka screen burn: this for LCDs, unlike (mostly) for CRTs, is reversible.

The most direct means to reverse the image persistence is to simply turn your monitor off for some time--approaching the amount of time you had a static image on the screen that caused the burn-in in the first place.

I had it happen to me too...and reversed it (work machine has two 20" Dell LCD panels, and both suffered burn-in).

I dont know... After reading the PC magazine that found it's way to my doorstep yesturday afternoon I read that the Dell Monitors specfically the 20 inch lacks in graphical quality scoring a low 60 something bencchmark, while some NEC scored high 80's

I just got a widescreen Acer AL1916W (19 inch). I love it! Definitely won't go back to the square look.

might want to verify your video card can support the resolution of the WS LCD Before you actually buy the LCD. I don't know about the smaller WS LCDs, but most of the 24"+ LCDs only work with a few video cards because of their native resolution.
and not running native resolution on an LCD isn't a good idea..

i'd prefer a WS, but as dman stated in his post above, not all vid cards support WS, my lappy doesn't. i'm considering upgrading lappies, b/c of it. well, i was gonna get a new lappy soon, this is just motivation to do it sooner.

You know, I'm also in the marke for a 19" or 20", probably widescreen.
For awhile I was getting set to buy the 2007WFP, but then I heard some stories about "banding" issues with the wfp--anyone know anything about this?
What, no comments? I'd really like some users' take on this...The 2007wfp has real nice specs on paper, and the price is right, but there's that nagging little "color banding" issue some have reported.
I've heard other people talk about banding, but didn't pay much attention to them because I don't have one of those monitors.. maybe try one of the dell threads??
^Alright, makes sense. I'll check the Dell sections.
in case you never found an answer, dell officially addressed the banding issue by suspending shipment on their 20 and 24 inch widescreen models and having the firmware fixed. they also offered free replacements for owners of both those models irregardless of purchase date/return period. and now they are selling the revised models (actually, since the beginning of the month) that should not show the same banding issues. that's why on the website the monitor may show up as model fpw rather than wfp. check the version number on the back for A02 (vs A01).

about screen size, a 19 inch widescreen will be approximately the height of a 15 inch 4:3 screen. a 23/24 inch widescreen should hold the same height as a 19 inch 4:3. go with the 2007 for the best compromise. check this place out for comparisons: www.tvcalculator.com
