How does DVI out on the D/Dock work? I have a D620

I'm scratching my noggin, maybe this just doesn't work.

Dell Latitude D620 (no DVI, duh)
D/Dock has a VGA and DVI out
Viewsonic 19" LCD hooked up to the D/Dock through DVI
Gets no signal
Hook it up by the VGA on the D/Dock and works fine.

I was under the impression that you could use the DVI out on the D/Dock even though the D620 itself only has a VGA out. Not a big deal if I can't use DVI, but thought it was possible.

After about an hour the boneheads at Dell support said I need a DVI cable. No shit...so I gave up with them.

Make sure your monitor is set to use DVI as it's input and not D-Sub. My Dell 20" Flat panel you have to select the input you want to display. Apart from that the only thing I can think of is a defective dock.

Are you trying to use the external monitor as the laptop's ONLY display, or in cooperation with the Laptop's panel?

Yup have DVI connected only and set the monitor for DVI and get the no signal message on the monitor.

Ideally I'd like to have both screens running, but just having the one going would be fine, but it's like the laptop doesn't even see it on DVI.

Did you check the Windows display settings or the Nvidia control panel to see if maybe its set to VGA out by default and you have to enable DVI?

Yeah no way to set the output that I can see, this has the integrated Intel graphics.

I give up on it, it's not that big of a deal, just a bit irritated that it wouldn't work. I've got bigger problems to fix though, this was just an annoyance.

Thanks for the tips though.

why not call support and ask?

Support folks are retards unless you get folks in the Poweredge and up area. The person I've already talked to said it wasn't working because I need a DVI cable, which I told several times I already had.

did you try checking the bios to see if theres anything in there? If i recall, there is some option that has to do with graphics and docking in my D820's bios but i dont remember exactly what.

I didn't have to do anything in BIOS on my DDock to use the DVI output. I just shut it down (windows does NOT like you swapping monitors between inputs when hot.) and rebooted and the DVI worked. HOWEVER, I do have it set in BIOS to use the dock's video card first before it uses the internal...I think that option only affects people that have a PCI graphics card in their DDock.

I think the problem is the integrated graphics, not the D620

My D620 with the Nvidia NVS 110 works great with DVI using the Dport advanced port replicator. I have it connected to a 2007FP using DVI running at 1600x1200

This setup worked with a D800 with a (forget which model) NVidia card.

However, it did not work with a D505 with integrated graphics. I did not bother with the VGA because I needed the VGA connection for another system without DVI.
