S96J Quick Review, Full Soon

Well today I finally got my S96J from gentechpc.

Luckily, it looks perfect, no dead pixels, no problems, thus yet.

First of all it is much thinner than I thought it would be, much thinner, it is also much nicer looking aswell.

The screen is very nice, it is very bright and vibrant, the res is very good for me as well.

The keyboard is good despite a little flex, but it is still very good.

I will do a full review with pics soon, if you have any questions just ask!

I'm having a little trouble getting used to the keyboard. I type really fast and don't seem to be able to, yet, on the laptop. I'm not sure if it's the sort of ... rickety? nature of the keys.. or if that's the 'flex' you're talking about. I have small hands and it almst seems like I'm having to stretch too much But I know it can't be bigger than the standard keyboards I use.

Well I might be spoiled by my microsoft natural keyboard at work.

I wonder if it's possible to put another keyboard into it.

Yeah, I guess so, it doesnt bother me though, you can try an external usb keyboard?

I'm having to get used to how close to the keys the touchpad is. You can't know how many TKs in Counter-strike I have because I accidentally let my thumb fall and hit the pad.

But, ya, there's some flex in the keyboard, but the keys have a nice resounding "pop" when they register which negates it for me....like I said in my review.

I need to check but I'm away. I didn't install the touchpad drivers.....is there a way for me to disable it completely?

I think you should be able to disable it in the control panel - mouse settings.

I'll double check it when I get home.

Talking about the keyboard, I noticed in the pictures the letters on the keys all looked a lot like stickers just stuck on to the keys. Most keyboards look like the letters on the keys are part of the plastic, but in the pics I saw of the s96j, they even had little boarders of a slightly different color than the keys. Does it look like that in person, or was it just the picture I was looking at?

Upon closer examination I cant really tell.

They might look just like a little bit raised but they look very well put on, so I cant tell whether they are or not.

Here is a close-up to decide for yourself:

The top-rightmost special key (just left of the LEDs) disables the touchpad for me.

Which driver enables those? I'm trying to install as little as possible.

I'm fairly sure it's the ATK100 package, because it includes the OSD utility (Which is used when you disable/enable the touchpad

Na, I have that installed and it's not working.

Actually, now when I think of it, it could possibly be the touchpad drivers themselves that enable the shortcut key for it.
