I just wanted to say that I have an XPS M1730, and I love it to death. I have had zero problems, and would heartily recommend it. It's great for gaming, CAD, graphic design work and other intensive work. It is heavy, though, so consider that if you're looking at it.

Hi Guys,

I am looking to buy a new netbook. Have considered Aspire One, MSI Wind and Asus EEE PC 901.

I want something with a 8-10' screen and in the region of 3-400 euro.

Recommendations would be greatly appreciated, I have to say I am a novice on these things.

Thanks a million.

what about a laptop for someone who is always on the go. I travel a ton for buisness and I need a laptop that meets this lifestyle. Powerful meets travelable meets style. Any other products or peripherals to help me stay connected when I am on the go would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello all, First of all thank you for the useful post and recommended laptops sticky. I am a student and am looking to buy my first laptop, however I am also quite laptop-illiterate. What I am mainly looking for is the following qualities: Good processing speed, Wireless connection, Doesn't have to have the best graphics as I probably won't be gaming on it, Not a huge screen of 17inch etc, Not heavy if possible, Able to connect to say a webcam/digital camera, Enough memory/space, good battery life. Any price range I am willing to look at (rather too many options than too few) because likely will be using this laptop very much! Much appreciated if someone could help this newbie out. Regards, ~Kim

some of your terms are a bit vague, since "good" and "enough" can mean different things to different people.

Current notebook batteries can last less than an hour on some models and up to 4 hours on others, with most ranging between 2 and 3 hours. How long do you need the notebook to last while on battery power?

Also, what do you plan to be storing on the notebook? Do you expect to save a lot of pictures and videos on your computer? Those will take up a lot more space than word processing documents, for instance.

And what will you be using the notebook for? You said you don't expect to play games, but if you're into digital art or professional design, or if you plan to watch high definition movies on your notebook, you'll still need a dedicated video card. Also, what programs will you likely be running at the same time? This helps determine how much memory you need.

Thank you very much for your swift response! It was really hard to find someone that responded to my questions. 1) I think I need the notebook to last 3 hours while on battery power, as I'm an international student and would probably travel from place to place to visit family, as well as needing it to last during lectures. 2) Realistically speaking I would probably end up storing alot of pictures on it and maybe some music files. I doubt I would upload videos, however. 3) I'd likely end up using the notebook for word processing, web browsing and maybe have Adobe Photoshop (or a likely program) installed. However the latter is purely as a hobby rather than being used constantly for it. If by high definition movies you mean downloading, I wouldn't use it for that, but I'd definitely plug in CDs for listening to music. Perhaps the odd DVD as well but not often. 4) I would probably run the internet, messenger, word processing, and perhaps a program such as Windows Media Player/Winamp to play music at the same time. Again thank you very much for your time, effort and quick answer.

Check out the HP dv4t series as one option.

I'd advise you buy a notebook with 250GB or more hard drive space, 2GB or more RAM, and an Intel P8400 or P8600 processor. You shouldn't need anything special for graphics, so anything will do there. You're probably going to want a 13" or 14" screen based on your size and weight preferences.

I would recommend a macbook or a macbook pro.

The thing I hate about laptops is the need for customer support. If my desktop breaks, I just open it up and replace the parts.

If something fries in my laptop, I can't really do the same unless it's a hard drive or ram.

If you're a student, it really sucks when you ship your dell in and you don't get it back for a month. After this, I switched to a macbook pro. You get usually the top of the line specs and you get awesome tech support. If something breaks, you just take it to an apple store. Nice and easy.

^^ Apple Care does come in handy. As long as one has it, the support is tip top.

Out of the 2, the HP comes out better in price and specs. It would satisfy your business needs.

Do you mean to say that there is an Thinkpad that is better that I can pay a little more for? I ask because my current TP has taking a licking and its ticking just fine. I don't want a computer that will need to be replaced in a few years. So if you think I would be better served to spend a little more, please advise. Thank you so much for your response.
Not at all. If ThinkPad is what you want, then the model that you posted would do fine. If you have to choose between the 2 then HP price/performance is better.

The HP dv7 model is a very good one that HP offers. You can always use the saved $$ for an extended warranty.

cheers ...
