Excellent guide! Thanks for the details.

Hi all.

Need to pickup a laptop for my sister who is moving out. Very image conscious so she wants something slim and reasonably good looking.

Everyday use. Internet, word, music, etc. Prefer a reasonably pleasant experience so fast processor, enough RAM, etc.

Not fussed on brands but want a reputable brand. Her budget is no more than 1k and preferably less.

I've been researching but just can't find something that suits all the above. Any tips?

Thanks

Check out the Asus U30Jc. You can get it from an Asus reseller, such as GenTechPC, one of our NBF Official Resellers, or from bigger online stores such as Newegg.

You can find reviews at PC Magazine, Engadget & CNET

Hi,
I am going to university this year and I would like to buy laptop. I am going to study IT, very likely Graphics field. Therefore, laptop should be suitable for aplications like 3DS Max, Blender, Maya etc. I don't play PC games anymore. Only 2 games I want to play in the future are Mafia 2 and Diablo III. I watch some movies from time to time. I can spent maximally 1500€/1800$. I have found several interesting pieces.

Dell Studio 15/17
Dell Vostro 3500/3700
Sony Vaio E family
Sony Vaio F family

But one of my classmates is going to buy ASUS g73jh(http://tinyurl.com/25eerrb), what is more powerful yet cheaper laptop than those I mentioned before. Now, I don't need gaming PC, but it is cheaper and more powerful. However, it is Asus. I am not sure whether I should trust Asus. I like Dell and Sony much more as companies and when it comes to design they are better as well. Which one would you suggest? None of these? Feel free to suggest anything else.

Thanks very much
Manthess

Casual Gaming Laptop

I guess this is as good a place as any to ask?
Does anyone have any thoughts on these 2 notebooks for casual gaming (WoW, EVE, SC2, CS: Source, etc).

Acer AS7741G-5877
Gateway NV79C47u

I hate to base it on looks, but I do like the style of the Acer better than that of the Gateway, and I don't need the 500GB HDD, so really my only issue is whether or not a Core i5 is really better for my needs over a Core i3.
If there's a better area to post this question, just let me know, thanks!

The advantage of the i5 is that it can do Turbo Boost, which allows it to automatically overclock when it's not putting out too much heat or when both cores aren't needed. Both systems have the same very capable graphics card and Acer owns Gateway, so they're pretty much made by the same company.
I understand that the i5 has the turboboost, the question is, for the kind of use the computer will get, is the turboboost worth it? They're both hyperthreaded, and since the GPUs and memory are the same, it really comes down to whether or not the i5 really has enough extra noticeable capability to it to make it a deciding factor for my purchase.

All other things being equal, I'd go with the i5 CPU. I think it will result in slightly better gameplay. However, you have to decide if the design of the Acer is more important to you than the somewhat better performance of the Gateway or not.

Ok I need some help in picking a laptop for school. I have found 2 that seem pretty good but I am not sure that they are worth the ~$600 I would be paying for them.

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036
1.8 GHz AMD Phenom II P820 triple-core processor
4 GB DDR3 memory
320 GB SATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics card
14-inch widescreen HD TruBrite

ASUS UL30VT-X1K
1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 Duo Processor
4GB of DDR3 RAM
500GB SATA Hard Drive
NVidia G210M Graphics with 512MB DDR3 + Intel GMA 4500MHD (Switchable VGA)
13.3" HD LED Display

So which one do you guys would be better or should I be looking at something else.

$600 for the mentioned models is not so bad. Out of the 2 I would pick the Toshiba. What exactly do you intend to do with the notebook?

cheers ...

school, light gaming, videos (like youtube, hulu, netflix), and maybe some light video editing. Also the toshiba is $500.

Can't go wrong with that price

cheers ...

Thanks for the help! I am in the market and looking for something that will provide dependable service and storage. I need something that is durable as I travel a lot and use my notebook for work on a daily basis. What would you say are the more durable notebooks that also provide other qualities that make for a well-rounded notebook?

Hey guys, I just need a second opinion.

My budget is $1800, but I want to keep it as low as possible.

I have found what seems to be the perfect laptop for me.

It's got the i7-740QM. The nVidia GTX 460m, and Dual HDDs.

Along with the Intel Ultimate-N 6300 wireless upgrade and the ability to go up to 16GB of RAM, I don't think I can go wrong for about $1,600.

Other specs that I like over the Sager NP 8690 I was looking at:

Backlit keyboard
2gb RAM more on order.
Dual HDDs

all for $50 more.

The only problem is I won't be able to get the IC Diamond thermal compound. (I heard they really price gouged on that one anyway.)

Tough call, good systems (both count) from one of many reliable sellers. But Sager has better track record than ASUS in USA regarding gaming machines.

cheers ...

Can you extrapilate on that for me?
Sager is pretty much settled as one of many gaming machines before ASUS came on the market with its ROG series, starting with the G50 a while back - in USA. This however does not translate to ASUS being a bad gaming machine, au contraire, looking at my personal Z83V machine . But in term of gaming, ASUS is still taking a back seat, perceptionally, to Sager (and a few others).

cheers ...

what are the drawbacks then, of ASUS? Or are there no drawbacks?
