So, even though the aspects of this Asus seem to be much better, and in much respects, these machines have the same components, you'd still go with the Sager, why?

Q's point, if I am correctly understanding it, is that Sager (and by extension Clevo, the ODM that makes virtually all their systems) tends to make notebook computers that have the absolute highest performance possible, although they also make some other systems. Clevo was selling gaming notebooks for a few years before Asus in the US market under the Sager, Eurocom, and Alienware brands and so their gaming notebook have had a chance to develop more of a following among notebook computer gaming enthusiasts.

Asus has a different corporate vision and a much wider product range. As a result, they are not known as well for their gaming systems as Sager may be among enthusiasts in the US. This does not make the brand or its products inferior in any way, but simply less well known for their gaming systems.

As for your choice, I would get the Asus for the reasons you mentioned. I do not think Q was saying that he thinks you should change your mind. I think he was just making a remark about the different length of availability of each brand and potential enthusiast perception differences between brands in the US.

Sounds good, I love the way that Asus looks. I hear their customer service is terrible though.

My question really is, what is the cheapest machine I could get that will last me a few years and run StarCraft II on Ultra?

Can't say better myself.

I feel like I'm running out of time, so I will repeat my question:

What is the cheapest machine I could get that will last me a few years and run StarCraft II on Ultra?

Thank qhn, it seems my now dead Acer Aspire 5920g would have been capable (which is why I bough it for 2,100 4 years ago.) Unfortunately, it does not work anymore

So I guess for $1650 the Asus is a good investment and will give me many years of gaming and joy

The fact is, I saved all that money up for when my laptop gave up the ghost, so I guess I shouldn't be upset. However the economy sucks and I haven't been able to get a job, so when the next emergency comes around, I'm probably screwed.

It is still quite a bit of $$ to give out, but comparing to what it used to cost notebook is getting better and cheaper. Look around some more as price will go down the next few months.

And things will get better

Unfortunately I can't wait a few months, I need a new laptop now. I would wait as long as I could if I was able.

How much of a price difference would i be if I had the ability to wait? It seems the price is always falling, so regardless if I wait or not, there will always be something better.
post #190 of 202
Let's take the ASUS in question as base. Price for the models with these same performance would fall another 10-15% (I am always optimistic ) - as far as something better you will always be chasing a ghost since performance gain are minimum comparing to gadgets performance. Do I really want to pay extra for USB3 if USB2 is still fine for the next few years per example?

cheers ...
post #191 of 202
Maybe if it was only a month, but I can't wait 3 months just for a 15% decrease.

Even though $1650 is a big chunk of change, I have a feeling I'll be as happy as a fat kid with cake when I get the Asus.

Hi!

I'm a Highschool senior. I'm buying my very first laptop(As the title says), with my hard earned money.

I've narrowed it down to two, and I was hoping to get some info from people who have experience with these two laptops or know of them. Any opinion is helpful though.

(Comes with a 9 cell battery and AC adapter)

~~~
I am willing to look at alternative suggestions...here are my preferences:
  1. Budget: A max of $1500
  2. Screen: Preferably a 15-16 in, but I'll consider a 17 in.
  3. Brands: Not HP or Sony(Bad past experiences)
  4. Mobility: Mobility is not a big issue. Battery life is not a big issue either, but at least two hours would be nice.
  5. Durability: I'm not taking it camping or off-roading, if that's what you're asking.
  6. Multitasking: Yup, I'm planning on a Multimedia major so think Photoshop, Word, Internet...
  7. Gaming: Not planning on it...
  8. Calculations: Possibly some...
  9. Storage: I'd prefer at least a 4 GB memory and 500 GB Hard Drive. I'll be storing school papers, photography, etc.
  10. Optical Media: I would prefer to have the option for burning CDs/DVDs
  11. Operating System: Windows 7
  12. Location: US
LOL, well that's nice... perhaps you could explain why? I'm having trouble convincing my mom that I'm not throwing away my money on an Asus. (She's read all those lovely stories of them 'crashing and burning'. Their laptops, that is.) That would be extremely helpful... Thanks!
Not much to explain really. The ASUS has better specs, good price and new.
I am not sure about the "crashing and burning" perception - all manufacturers have their own share of these crashing-n-burning models now and then. To be specific, I have yet hearing anything bad about this ASUS model.
cheers ...
Hi, new here and hoping for a laptop recommendation. I have a good regular desktop, but am leaving for 6 months and need to get a laptop.
What I need it for:
Photoshop, possibly Maya, movie watching/editing, general Internet stuff.
I'm looking for the following features:
Lightweight (preferably in the 3-5 lb range if possible)
Good res (Better than 1376x768 preferable)
Preferably a core i5 w/ a dedicated graphics card (but flexible as long as it can do decent graphics work)
Decent battery life
Good construction (but its not like I'm going to be bashing it w/ rocks :P )
Don't really care that much about HDD as I have an external.
No software/OS needed as I'll probably reformat it anyway.
I'm trying to shoot for below $800. Basically I'm looking for a portable Photoshop station. Thanks in advance
P.S. Would be nice if it had one of those awesome screens from Mirasol or LiquaVista, but I don't think there are any on the market yet.
post #198 of 202
You've got a problem: the specs you want (lightweight, well built, dedicated graphics, above average resolution) are not compatible with your price range. To get everything you want, you'll have to almost double your budget. A quick search on Newegg.com revealed that the lowest-priced notebook on their site with your desired specs costs just over $1400.
post #199 of 202
Hmm, yes looks like I'll have to lower my requirements. I'm more willing to compromise on weigh more than anything, but not too heavy.
Is there anything like the TOSHIBA Portege R705( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834214024 ) but heavier yet with higher res/ dedicated graphics for example?
post #200 of 202
How about the recertified Toshiba Tecra here? It's fairly light for the 15.6" screen size (5.63 lbs), has dedicated graphics and 3 hours battery life. Also, Toshiba has a pretty good reputation of late. It's more than your target price, but only $100 more so not as bad as others.
