Review: Quick Review: W3J+

I've had my W3J refresh for about a week now (specs in sig below). Initially, I stuck with the factory default two partition drive, but noticed that startup was slow and I was having wierd issues like the lockups and no wakeup after standby that some people are experiencing. So I reformatted with my own copy of Windows XP Pro, repartitioned to my liking (C: Drive - 11GB and D: Drive - 82GB... both NTFS), and trimmed down the unnecessary processes. Now I'm getting considerably faster startup and it got rid of the issues mentioned above.

My opinions:
I love the build quality on this.. I've used a W3V before, so I knew what to expect. This machine is rock solid and beautiful. The keyboard is good.. though some of the bigger keys like Enter and Space make a bit of a sound, but it's nothing to complain about. Comparing to my ASUS Z70va that I've previously owned (which had the best matte screen I've ever seen).. I must say that the W3J screen is a bit disappointing though after getting used to the Z70va's gorgeous screen. Looking straight on.. the colors are vivid and sharp, but move your head a little and the colors start getting washed out. This is the one real con about this notebook.. the viewing angles need improving. But I can live with it. As for the noise factor.. there is none.. this machine is absolutely quiet. Again, comparing with my Z70va, the W3J controls the fan a lot better. Quite surprising considering the power this thing packs. As for heat, the air coming out the right side vent (another con for me, since I would prefer this was on the left.. but what can you do) when surfing the web, word processing, or listening to music and watching DVD's ..it is just warm. It gets hot when gaming, but nothing to worry about. It's not burn to the touch hot.. just a bit uncomfortable. The touchpad is a bit better than the previous one ASUS had been using. It feels more responsive. The speaker sound is weak, like most of you have heard.. but in the BIOS, there is a setting to raise the volume level to 8 (default at 4).. I'm still not sure if this is just for the bootup sound or if it also affects Windows. It does sound like the volume went up a bit though.. I'll keep testing.

I'll be gaming with Oblivion, Doom3, and COD2 next time, so I can get a feel on how much faster the x1600 is than the x700 that my Z70va had. Overall.. this notebook is an excellent buy. Definitely worth every penny spent.

Are you getting similar battery life to what others are reporting? (around 3 hours), more, or less?

Oh I forgot about battery life.. thanks Djembe for pointing that out. With screen brightness on max, iTunes playing, web browsing, and word processing... I get ~3:15 hours. I haven't undervolted yet, so I'm hoping to gain an extra 10-15 mins after.

EDIT: with bluetooth off/wireless on - I get ~3:35

Good to hear Ledzepp, I have my z70va up for auction and loved it however its been feeling like I'm carrying a tank lately thru the airports traveling and what not.

I want the smaller form factor and I’m considering a few notebooks at this time M1210 Dell the W3J and the W7J, and also the A8JM not sure yet but your opinion especially being a former Z70VA is greatly appreciated.

does the W3J have the 2nd battery option in the optical bay like the Z71V and Z70V?? If so, is the battery time you listed with it in or out? Also, post as soon as you undervolt. I plan to undervolt when I buy and am interested in how it will perform then...

Yes it does have an optical bay. I don't have the 2nd battery, so I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly how much extra battery time you'd get.

I"ve got the W3J with the modular battery. 1/2 brightness and wifi on listening to mp3's gets me a bit over 2 hours using the modular battery. So a safe bet would be right around 2 hours it adds to the W3J

The cost eh?

Just a small update about the gaming capabilities of the W3J.. After I installed my Seagate 5400.3rpm HD and 2GB Corsair RAMs.. I've been able to play Oblivion (highly graphic demanding game) on high settings with HDR on. I used to get around ~20FPS outdoors and ~40FPS inside with my Z70va w/ an x700, but now I'm getting ~30FPS outdoors and ~50FPS indoors. The gameplay is really smooth.

i'm interested to find out about how hot the W3J gets...

how loud do the internal fans get?
In terms of temps for my W3J:

CPU = Between 51-59 constant cycle with the fan going on and off and different intervals, somewhat anoyying wish i could adjust fan speeds.

HDD = 43 all the time

The only fan which is on the cpu has 3 settings i think, 1st setting you can't hear it 2nd setting its noticable and the 3rd is plain loud but only is on that fast while playing 3d games.

Most of the time the fan is on the middle setting and sometimes goes to the first setting

I just got lucky and got a 2-month old w3j+ for $1500, so I sold my z70va (for $1475 on ebay). I definitely agree everything you said about the W3J. I was about to write a quick review comparing the 2, but you kinda beat me to it.

Although I definitely love my Z70va, it was just too heavy to lug around, especially goin' through airports...

The W3J is almost the ideal laptop. The only bad thing about it is the LCD screen, which is a huge disappointment in comparison to the Z70Va screen. The viewing angles on the z70va was awesome; everything was sharp, color was even throughout the screen, and no bleeding at the edges. The W3J screen is much brighter than the z70va, and colors are more vivid, however viewing angles are crap (the screen has to be exactly 90 degrees from you eyes, any other angle makes it difficult to see), colorshine\crystalshine is very annoying (reflections make it hard to concentrate on the screen, especially when you're doin' graphics or typing on word), and there's lots of bleeding at the edges (top), especially noticeable on dark images (black shades). I just can't believe Asus would use such a crappy screen on such an awesome laptop!

Whereas the z70va was very noisy, the W3J is dead silent, even on "Super Performance" mode.

Dothan 2.0GHz vs. Core Duo 2GHz? Core Duo smokes the dothan. On the z70va, when encoding video or other CPU intensive things, the computer basically slows to a crawl & you can't really do anything else. On the Core Duo, it only uses about 50-60% of the the CPU, so the computer doesn't lock up and you can still move about easily---yet encoding is faster despite using just 1/2 of the cpu processing ability.

Personally, if Asus would change the screen, the W3J would be the perfect laptop computer!

i was working on my friend's old ACER ferrari laptop with an ATI 9700 radeon card in it.. that machine got pretty hot. (i never checked temperatures) but when i had my palms on the laptop to type, my left palm got heated up real quick, like touching the hood of a car after driving a few miles.

does the W3J heat up the palms like that?

is that automatically controlled by the machine or can you manually set it?

I had an Acer Ferrari 3200 before, that thing gets HOT! Hated it. It felt cheap. The W3J definitely doesn't feel cheap at all! The W3J doesn't heat up at the palm rests at all. The only heat you'll feel comes from the fan vent on the right side. That gets warm, but never hot, as compared to the ferrari. As for the fan, that's automatically controlled. There's no need to download SpeedFan--as was necessary for my previous z70va.

Is the screen really that bad?? Should I consider buying a different laptop?
Is there any place in Chicago where I could see W3j on display?

So ledzepp14, how are the palm rests for you? Also, where did you buy it?
