The sound was working fine but then it went out, ive have rebooted, check to make sure it wasnt muted, checked, the volume level, and checked the volume control panel.

Does anyone know where you can get the latest audio drivers for it?

Do you know the best method to install it? Because i am not sure whatsoever.

Everything was working fine till I plugged in a headset and then unplugged it, when I unplugged it is when it lost the sound.

Thanks

I plugged in my headset a few times over the last couple days. Last night when I plugged it in, the sound initially went out on the speakers like it was supposed to, but when I unplugged it and plugged it back in, I had sound through both the speakers and the headset.

Audio seems to be the one major failing of this laptop

Yup, I got my sound back by wriggling the audio jack, the audio is where this laptop apparently falls short. Oh well everything else seems great.

Its not a driver issue if you were able to wriggle the audio jack out. It might be the headphone jack might not be connected properly. Ive had that numerous times where you think the speakers arent working but its the headphone jack itself thats at fault.

WAIT, Nooo! I use mainly my computer for music, so if that is a major failing point, I may not be so sure about this computer anymore. I know there are those PCMCIA sound cards, but that could ruin it for me. Is this most likely a hardware or software issue (sounds like it might be hardware with the wigling thing)?

its dependent on how you take care of the jack. (IPodders and Mp3 player jacks have this problem too) If you pull it out too hard or at an angle, it will loosen the connector. There are ways of fixing the jack with reparing the jack, but im not sure.

Apparently thats probably what it is, but I have only heard of it happening on my own S96J, I dont know about other S96J'a, as said before It will be a minor annoyance to me but I will be using a headset or external speakers most of the time. The onboard speakers suck to the point of not using them anyways.

Yeah, I would be using my Grado SR60s, but if the headphone jack is screwed up, it wouldn't matter either way.

Its messed up by the fact that when you disconnect something from the headphone jack sometimes the audio doest revert from that external device back to the laptops internal speakers.

It wont matter if you are using external speakers.

Plus this is my S96J there is no fact that this will be a problem on other S96J's.

The actual onboard speakers are so low anyways that you wont be using them anywhere near any type of noise.

Ok, so if its not reverting back to the speakers, then its a driver issue. But what got to me was that you said by wriggling the headphone jack, you were able to get sound again so now it could be either?

When I wriggled the headphone back is to get sound back on the laptops own speakers.

USAP,

So you stick the jack halfway in and then wriggle it to get the on-board speakers to work? If so, then, clearly, the on-board speakers think something is still plugged in even though there isn't. Can you repeat this problem?

Mine have been fine from day one and I'm constantly switching back and forth

Enk1du,

This is the first instance of something being physically wrong with the audio, so let's see if we can get to the bottom of it before sweating it. Second, PCMCIA won't be a solution cause it doesn't have one. I can tell you that with a good set of headphones, this thing puts out amazing audio. For even more amazing audio I'm running a firewire audio interface through a mixer to some monitoring speakers and will be switching to an ExpressCard solution as soon as somebody puts one out.......come on ECHO or M-Audio.

Ok, well, I'll wait and see than, thanks. Anyway, I just confused PCMCIA with expressCard (I assumed they were the same )

Enk1du, we make mistakes and that was a small one... Anyways if its a driver problem, and when fixed I can say Grado SR60's will sound AWESOME!

Yeah, its true, as I said before it isnt gonna be a problem for at least me because they are so low I wouldnt be using then normally anyways, as said, I will get a good pair of external or clip-on speakers.

I found a way for it not to happen, (the audio problem).

If I pull the headset out quickly (not yanking it but quickly) the audio came back every time. The problem also seem to get a little better after new audio drivers even though I think this has no effect. Maybe it will go away completely from the audio jack is used some more times.

Mine is playing in both the speakers and the headset at the same time. My mic stopped working on the headset though.. maybe the headset is having an issue.

I have to add, that the headphone jack on the S96J is my only real problem with it. Mostly the placing, as I bet sometime I'll accidently break it by putting down my hand on the cord or something like that. I've got my eyes on a FireWire soundcard from Terratec though, might just get that as it seems there are no ExpressCard solutions are coming any time soon.
