I need to know which of these will last longer, I am hoping that it will last me at least the four to five years I will be in college.
Do any of these laptops have quirks or common problems?
So far I have heard that the Tech support for the HP sucks and that the keyboard is stiff. I have heard nothing bad about the Toshiba though. Please if you have any experiences with these computers post it here.
P.S. If there are any other brands that you would recommend highly please let me know.
If you're interested in the (Z) series dv8xxxx line you need to check out this thread:HP dv8000z & HP 1410 $499.99 @ Office Depot on SALE thru the 8th July-2006http://www.notebookforums.com/thread161138.html
For about $800 you can get one spec'd out pretty good.
TIP BUY with base ram, buy 2gig worth of ram thru www.newegg.com
If it was me, I'd go for a (t) series (dv8000t) The video card (GPU), the CPU, the ram, the hard drives, etc is much better /faster.... The above being said the OD deal dv8000z should be perfectly fine for few years use.
(Do a search via my user name, I've made a bunch of posts on the dv8**** series.) (*= wildcard)
I'd advise you to read thru the:Mobile Graphics Card Comparison Charthttp://www.notebookforums.com/thread157799.htmlThinking of purchasing the dv8000t for college...http://www.notebookforums.com/thread159990.html
On the Tosh, vs the HP services issues... HP, DELL, etc all outsource their call centers to "India"....
On the Toshiba's... I heard a bunch of horror stories getting units fixed as well.
(Heck I had a big screen TV thru Toshiba that took 9 months, and multiple screw ups, with at times having (2) big screen TV's in my living room, plus having to keep the box for the one going back for several weeks at a time.)Another thing to consider... HP focuses on computer related items... Toshiba making a little of "everything".Whatever you do.. buy an external hard drive unit... You will thank me later,,, right now one of the best is on sale for $24.99 ..LINK here: http://www.notebookforums.com/post2241180-6.html
PS: As a tip, post the specs/prices of the unit you're looking at... What your needs will be (Are you wanting to play the latest games for example, will be doing CAD drafting that may require a powerful GPU.)
While I know you want the unit to LAST thru college, keep in mind in a year, two or three you could buy a "cheaply priced" unit (like the OD $499 deal)... and then in a few years buy one for about the same amount of money which is three times as fast for the same amount of money.
Also keep in mind it may get "stolen"... (That's one reason to buy an external hd enclosure.... Your computer gets stolen and all your DATA goes by-by)
