intel core 2 duo - Page 2

ahhhh so after july 23rd and price cuts. Thats the best time to buy a Core Duo 1 unless you want to wait for the higher prices of merom.

I wouldn't say that it's a bad idea - I just wouldn't buy one of the high-end ones. Buying a cheap T2300E would be a decent option (and you can upgrade that to a Core2 Duo later).

no more T2300 but i'm planning on getting T2400
I decided that it was a good deal. 1 because when merom comes out they will slow down on deals, 2 when merom comes out i'm not sure how dell zones out previous processors but i'm afraid they will get rid of them completely on e1705, 3 right now merom is already sorta (out) so this would be the time when dell is trying to get rid of their old stock anyway. How long do you have to cancel an order or send it back for no charge btw? aka if i find a better deal before its sent here. Also if something goes wrong, (defect) how long do you have to send it back.

does anyone have a conclusive date of when merom will be in dell's laptops? I'm debating whether to hold off and get the merom (its supposed to be the same price as yonah) or hit up this 35% and 12% epp deal for the e1705 and upgrade later (don't really need too much power right now, just want to play oblivion).

i just got off the phone with dell actually. there still is no conclusive date.

and any info about how much bucks will dell be lowering their price on their laptop's as soon as the merom comes out??

My guess is that they will try to completely phase out the yonahs when merom comes out. I think they cost around the same to manufacture. Possibly they will offer meroms and yonahs (as higher and lower priced options) for a period of time until they empty the stock of yonahs.

guys, the price is not going to drop that much, maybe $100-$150 off the high end processors, $75 off the lower end ones.

Plus Dell will add the core 2 duo processors shortly after its release, causing the notebook prices to actually go up. They are getting rid of the their core duo notebooks now rather than when they duo 2 comes out. Thats why you are seeing these deals.

Given that Core 2 is due in like 10 days, so we can expect to see new laptops in three weeks or so - is it worth waiting for a new range before ordering?

About to order a Dell Precision M90,wondering what impact Merom will have on performance. Is it the same DDR2 RAM at the same speeds?

Yes, Merom still uses DDR2-667, just like Yonah did. Eventually they'll move to DDR2-800 (with the i965GM/PM chipsets), but not for the early CPUs.

this may be a silly q, silly or not, are the core duos in e1705s socketed?
is it a simple matter to upgrade to a merom? i assume my notebook wil have to be sent back to dell to upgrade it?
Andrew

Yes, the CPU is socketed. Dell provide the service manual, so you can upgrade it yourself if you feel like it.
really? i have the owners manual, product info guide etc. but i cant see anything relating to changing cpu? will it void warranty?
do current motherboards in inspirons have support for core 2 duo chips?
i read somewhere they do... now just to wait to see how much theyll be, might give it a few months though, this T2500 is only 2 weeks old!
Still like to know if and how it can be done for when the time does come.

meh, i just ordered a e1705 for about $1350

Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2500 (2GHz/667MHz FSB)
17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS
100GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

so t2500 is a higher end processor soon to be cheaper? i though $1350 was pretty cheap. i dont think i will be upgrading to merom soon, maybe next year.
wth how did u get it down to 1350. did you do it through home or epp or something? I used epp and used t2400 1gig 533mhz and only got it down to 1450 or something.

That was when the epp site still did the 35% off.

You need the Service Manual. That explains how to dismantle the laptop (and access the CPU).

I'm not sure about warranty, but it probably will be void if you do that upgrade.

Current mainboards in the Inspiron 6400 and 9400 (E1505/E1705) do have support for Merom, but they need a BIOS update (which you can download from Dell's website).
