First post here. I just bought an Inspiron 6400 with
-Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2400 (2MB Cache/1.83GHz/667MHz FSB),
-Wide Screen SGA+ Display
-1GB DDR2 @ 533MHz
-256MB ATI Mobility Radeon x1400
-120gb 5400rpm Hard Drive
-9-cell battery
for $1,239.00 CDN, (which amounts to 1,095.30 USD) and I'm wondering if I should cancel the order before they ship and wait for a Merom core or not. Is this a decent price, or should I cancel? I can't really afford to spend much more than this, and need a laptop by the time September rolls around.

thanks

Hello all,

First post to the forum. Great stuff here, I've been reading for hours.

A guy I work with that is our Intel partner technical account manager has a Core 2 Duo box on his desk that he is in the process of testing/certing for our distro. They send him a lot of stuff like this before it goes to market for eval/test/cert.

I was talking to him a couple days ago since I was about to buy a laptop. He suggested waiting a couple of weeks because the Core 2 Duo's were going to be out. I don't know which (if any) of Dell's current laptop models' motherboards will support the lower voltage but he said these DO use a lower voltage and so not all boards will be compatible with them. They'll also have EM64T flavors available for laptops apparently. He did also say that the processors should be very affordable.

My wife read yesterday morning somewhere that Intel is laying off thousands of employees to help keep the price of the Core 2 Duo's low so people will buy them (apparently they're afraid people won't, probably due to the quad-core factor).

(man, how would you like being one of those factory workers that busted your a** to help get the latest product out the door and then after the first production runs are finished, they give you a pink slip?)

I ended up not waiting to order my Precision M90 as I need it for class and already have an EM64T box to build x86_64 packages with.

I got it from the Dell.ca E-Flyer! http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topi...06_july_14_odg

I might as well keep my order. When the Core2's roll out, they might not offer nice discounts for it, and I wouldn't want to spend $300~ more for a laptop of the same specs.
