m1210 LCD light leakage :( - Page 2

Honestly, I don't think ANY of you have any light leakage. This is just the kind of screen it is. If you tilt the screen TOWARD you, you'll see that it appears the entire screen is one BIG leak. If you tilt the screen AWAY from you, you'll see the leakage "change." This is VERY typical of smaller notebooks in my experience.

The best way to test this is to go to the screen saver options and choose the screensaver called "Windows XP." Then click "Preview." On that screensaver, you'll see exactly what I mean. The M1210 is just not a very high contrast LCD. It's just the way it is. It's by no means awful though. As I said before, though, this screen isn't in the same league as the high contrast 17" WUXGA/Truelife screens Dell puts out.

I can definitely see what you mean. You just have to tilt the screen further back then what is probably used to (barely).

This is EXACTLY what I was trying to convey, but WilliamG said it much better than I!

Mine is arriving today as well.... & yeah it sure is tempting to try to make the LCD swap if the LCD on the M1210 is not as good as the one on my 700m....

Speed, let us know how this turns out, since I am happy about my screen except for the weak LCD lid which causes ripples (might have Dell send out a replacement lid/ or lcd kit)... from memory, my old 700m's screen had slightly less backlight leakage and blacks were slightly better... though the M1210 seems brighter to me too.

ok so my laptop arrived a few hours ago!!! man i gotta say i'm impressed with the difference between the xps and the inspiron. they do a much better job with all the fancy xps packaging and including extra goodies, and backup cds at no charge is also a big plus.

the m1210 looks sooo hot in person... even better than in the pics. the black badge really makes it stand out over the cheaper inspirons. and the webcam doesn't ruin the look of the laptop like i thought it would..

all that said.. i did get the AUO screen, but it's definitely not the AUO screen that's in my 700m. the screen is good quality (much better than my D620 samsung 14.1" wxga+). like williamg said, there really isn't any light leakage but you can see this weird effect when tilting the screen back and forth, which doesn't occur with my 700m screen. also, the viewing angles on the 700m were much better.... so i'll be attempting a swap later today

also, anyone know if xps support is outsourced to india like dell home or based in america like small business?

My previous system has AUO3214 screen (made in Jan 2006). After the exchange due to keyboard flex, the new one has LCD58E3 screen (made in May 2006). the new LCD screen is brighter but less contrast. Do you know its manufacturer ? I tried a lot of softwares but nothing can recognizes its manufacturer.

Yes the screen tilting thing is what I was talking about as well.. So this is normal?

The thing I find is that if I tilt it back far enough so I don't get any wash effect, it really starts to lose details in the blacks (talking about DVD viewing here).

Oh well it's not a huge problem, only when you've got blacks on the screen.

Thanks for the feedback.

Si.

woot! just letting everybody know that i successfully swapped screens with my 700m. i'll spare you all the details, but basically it's NOT just a simple swap. took me a little over an hour from start to finish, but it was worth it IMO...

Light leakage

Hi,

I just got a new XPS M1210. How do I check if there's a light leakage in the display?

Good to hear that!! I received mine yesterday as well & I have to admit that I was not too impressed with the screen!! I mean my 700m has also got the LCD by AUO (just like on the M1210) but somehow on the M1210, you can only view it straight-on without seeing the "leak." The 700m definitely has better viewing angles. (My 700m's LCD manufacture date is Jan 2004.) This is pretty interesting to note that the M1210 seems to be using poorer screens... My guess is that with all the news/talk of Dell trying to maintain their profit by getting their system from Quanta, Compal & the rest for cheaper prices, this issue applies to the LCD manufacturers as well! In my opinion, this translates to the LCD makers having to cut costs themselves to meet Dell's pricing & also to maintain their own profit & so they use cheaper materials... I may be wrong but it seems to me that nowadays the LCD screens on Dells are not as good as they are (like 2-3 years back).... *Sigh* Anyway, I guess that's what we get for paying the prices that we did (discounts)!!! All this just proves that the theory, "There is no free lunch in this world," is correct!!!! Note that all the above are just my opinion!

I got my D620 yesterday too and you are correct.

I am trying very hard to get my screen bright. I got the Nvidia and I can pump up the brightness and now it look wash out.

You have to look straight. Top and bottom looks darker. Bottoms loook brighter from the leakage.

My older Inspiron 6000 have great screen!

I wonder if I should return it or get a Samsung screen and try it out.

Dell really suck this time.
I wouldn't bother with replacing the screens if it is minor leakage. I mean I see this LCD issue as being part of selling the laptop cheap. I mean Dell wants to maintain their profits & I don't think the LCD suppliers want to lose any profit margin while supplying the LCDs to Dell at lower costs, so maybe the only to ensure that Dell & the LCD manufacturers themselves don't lose out on profit is to produce the LCDs at lower costs &.... (make up what you want about quality)...

All the above are just my opinions.
^if you're thinking about attempting a swap, i can try to walk you through it. it's not too complicated...

and ya its kinda sad to see that a 2 year old inspiron screen has better quality than a newer "xps" screen.
I agree, my old 700m screen was noticably better in the black and viewing angle department, otherwise with Adobe Gamma I have nice rich colors and this AUO screen is brighter with no sparkles or grain unlike the 630m/640m/XPS G2 TrueLife screens... so sad Dell is using subpar parts for their "premium" line... their profit margins on the XPS systems is definately high enough where they can spare a few extra dollars for better parts.

How much would a good LCD screen cost? And how easy is this exactly? Could you please write something up RoRo?
Interesting find to me. Read in other forums that some who just received their M1210 are getting the Samsung LCDs & not the AUO ones. Anyone here has got a "Sammy?" If so, how do you like it??? Want to share your opinions on them?

So if I buy a 700m screen off ebay, I can install it inside my m1210 using the same cables and all?
