Dell Latitude D820 hard drive replacement

Thread Starter
I recently purchased a D820 through Dell Outlet it was loaded with everything I wanted, with the exception of the hard drive 80 gig (5400 rpm.) I would like to replace the hard drive with a 100 gig (7200 rpm) and had a couple questions:

I am looking at either a Hitachi or Seagate (any preferences?) and I believe I need to order the SATA drive, am I correct?

Will either of the hard drives above hook up directly to my laptop (meaning pull out the 80 gig and slide in the new 100 gig) or do I need any special adapters to install?

Thanks for any help!

If you want to keep all your data, get a hard drive thatcomes witht the usb adapter &software or just get the adapter and software seperate. Yes, it is SATA. Many people are saying seagate is like "meh" quality and is overrated. i dont know about hitachi.

As far as installing the new drive, you should be able to just swap it out. If you want to keep using your old drive as an external for backup or whatever, youll need a SATA 2.5" drive enclosure. Theres not many out yet that support sata though.

I found this one and this one with USB and eSATA

I use the Hitachi 100GB 7200RPM and works fine so far. As long as its a 2.5" SATA drive its a direct replacement and very easy to install.

Yeah, just make sure you buy a SATA hard drive.

If you have a Desktop with two extra SATA ports it's quite easy to just use Norton Ghost to transfer one drive's contents to another. The power and data connections for 2.5" SATA and 3.5" SATA are both the same.

Thank you all for your help! of course now that I know which hard drive to get (Hitachi 100gb sata 7200rpm) I can't find one! seems everyone is out.

Last question: If I understand the above post right. If I find a usb2 to SATA adapter, I can plug my new hard drive into usb and use Norton gost to clone the drive, then I just swap them?

correct. Or like evil said- if you have 2 open sata ports on a desktop, you can hook both drives up to it and clone them that way
