Dell C600 Battery 'Gauge' Not Working

I did a search for this, but I am not too sure of the proper key words so I apologize if this has been covered.

I have a Dell C600 and the battery recently died, so I purchased a new one (Dell replacement, not aftermarket). I popped in the new battery and all was fine. A few days ago I did a clean install of Windows to start fresh (and wipe out the spyware) and when it came back up the battery 'gauge' in the bottom right hand corner told me that I was on AC Power when in fact the cord was disconnected.

I ran the BIOS upgrade that came with the battery to no avail. I should also mention that this is the same version (heck, same disk) of Windows that I was running previously without any issues.

Thoughts?

Is the battery monitoring part of the quickset?

Did you check the settings in Control Panel -> Power ?

Sorry...

Windows XP Home Edition. SPII I think.

Yes, I checked the settings and all that I found was an option to always display power in the bottom right hand tray. It does so, but always shows that I am on AC power.

hmm could be a damaged file during installation. Does the computer know its on battery as opposed to just windows? Like you can set a different brightness control for the notebook lcd based on battery and AC power.

Thanks for the thoughts...this one sort of resolved iteslf. After running with this issue for more than a week it suddenly, and without apparent cause, recognized the battery. "New Hardware Detected........"....well, it wasn't really new, but thanks for finding that Mr. Laptop. <Shrug> Alls well that ends well.
