Integrated graphics

OK basically I am just looking for some explanations on laptop graphics. I need a laptop for uni next year and I would like to do some gaming. I just would like someone to explain the different types of integrated graqphics to me (amd and intel). I think I understand the dedicated graphics cards well enough. I also want to know if integrated graphics would be able to play games like cs source or 1.6. And then if they would be able to play battlefield 2 or oblivion. I guess some of the integrated cards are better than others, and this is what I need help with. Thanks to anyone wishing to explain this stuff to me! Any laptop reccomendations are welcome too. (bearing in mind im from the UK)

If you wanna be able to play any of those games (or pretty much play games in general), you're gonna need a dedicated graphics card.. Integrated graphics solutions just aren't for gaming.

Are you sure? The reason I was asking is because I saw this topic: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread161315.html Where someone says that integrated graphics would play css and cs 1.6 fine. Also is anyone able to explain the different integrated graphics cards to me? Thanks.

Yes were sure, unless u want to play those games at 640*480 with 30 fps, and if so go for an integrated gpu.

But if u want better performance out of ur games than ^^^^, then go for a dedicated gpu. Basically, the only difference between integrated gpus is how new they are and how fast is the memory clock on it (which depends on the type and speed of ram the system uses).

Yeah and you mentioned games like Oblivion and such.. Integrated graphics stand no chance..

i have integrated graphics on my 700m, and i can play things like starcraft, rise of nations (not the same graphic quality as the xps), CS 1.5 (yes, my friends and i play 1.5 at lan parties sometimes), and i've played HL2 before on it (it was painfully slow, though that could be due to the fact i was around the train area with lots of stuff going on). i havent tried BF2 on it, but i would definitely say it's not up to the challenge. and from the looks of it, i would say oblivion would just be unbearable or not even start. integrated graphics are definitely not good for gaming, which is what i use my xps for mainly.
