heat issues

hey guys,

in the newspaper today, there was an article about batteries overheating and there was a story about a guy that left his laptop on for 30 minutes(he had walked away), and the laptop started smoking and the carpet all around the laptop was melting. so they took it outside and it blew up in flames.

anyways weird problem(first problem so far) for my macbook today.. i brought it to class as usual to take notes. at the end of the class i turned it off(it shut down like normal), and i put it in my backpack and came home. about one hour and a half later i heard a buzzing noise from my backpack and in there was my macbook heating up like crazy and the fans were running like mad. i pressed the on button but nothing happened so i just pulled the battery out. you guys have any idea what happened?

and i put the battery back in and now it won't turn on

take it to the nearest apple store and ask for a replacement.
the burning macs have been a problem, but hopefully in newer revisions the problems will be fixed

wonder with a new revision they will replace the old ones for free?

probably not but worth a shot. mine runs hot also. def. take the battery/laptop in to apple to look at.

I have had this happen to me on two occasions. I turned off the macbook, closed the lid and went to work. When I came home the white led was glowing and the notebook was hot. I tried to turn it on but nothing would happen. I held ctrl+apple+ the power button for a few seconds, let it go and pressed the power button again and everything booted up fine. After boot up, a message popped up saying "os x did not shut down properly..." or something. But everything has run fine since.

I think the reason this occured was that I closed the lid before os x was properly shut down. Now I wait a few seconds after the screen is black to close the lid.

i did this last night. i shut the lid before OSX had turned the mac off. i was putting it away and noticed the white led blinking, had to reboot, and got the error.

think its normal.
just gotta wait an extra second or two. if the notebook didnt power up , maybe because battery is dead because it was on the whole time

yeah thanks guys, you all nailed the problem. chev - battery was dead after all the fans even though it was still going, inda strange but when i plugged it in, it started running. proh - i closed it too soon like you said, rushed out of class.. thanks a lot guys. i got that same message too, the osx didn't shut down prop, oh well lesson learned.

Instead of shutting the computer down why not just put it to sleep?
yea ive calculated that "sleep mode" uses a litle less than 1% per hour of sleep.

not bad.

hmm so to put the computer to sleep all i do is close the laptop?

cause if that is the case that would not work because when i put it in my backpack it gets really hot because of the confined space it is in. but i'll do that if im at home

Putting it to sleep turns off the computer saving just a little power to keep everything in ram. It's not supposed to get hot.
yea it will not be hot at all with the lid closed in sleep mode.

i just close mine at night, and open it the next day. perfect, and windows still open where i want them.

sorry guys for this ignorant question... but in my original post, when i closed the lid(it didn't shut down all the way) wouldn't that have just put it to sleep?
yes it goes to sleeep, uses about 1% (not exactly maybe .5%). the laptop will not produce any heat in sleep, so its fine in bags.

If you closed the lid and it hadn't shut down all the way something might've conflicted and caused your problem.

If you just close the lid, however, without telling the computer to do anything it will go to sleep.
