IBM T41 Drivers/Noise when plugged in

How would I go about getting driver's I need for my new Thinkpad T41. I want to reformat and wipe it clean using a standard Windows XP Pro CD, alot of the IBM stuff seems like junk to me.

I looked on the website and it seems really hard to find driver's. Is there a CD I can order or an easy website?

Also is it normal to have a buzzing sound whenever you do something while the laptop is plugged in?? It's as if processor is running at full (it sounds like it does at full power, except only intermittently).

what was so hard about going here

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/us/all_...d_drivers.html

On the ibm main page it says support and downloads on the top nav bar.

What a great reply!!! Only that doesn't give T41 driver's does it. Nor does it if you search it. Try and go from there. I know how to find pages like that.

call 1 800 iIBM-SERV can ask them to send you the recovery cd set- should contain all driverd you'd need to reinstall...

that was 1- 800-IBM-SERV (had a typo in the last message)

Does that install the whole OS + all the junk?? I just want the basic needed driver's if possible.

im still waiting for my cds!- but they apparently send an XP cd separate from all other drivers (dvd etc)- so im sure you can be selective in the installation....btw, did you try doing the reload from Access IBM?

Ahh that's good. No I haven't, I don't have a recovery partition for some reason.
I can't say I am 100% sure, but you should not be able to see the recovery partition. It can be only read through IBM's Access IBM. I have R50P. I tried a few partitioning software, such as partition magic, none of them could see the recovery partition. Maybe you could see it through Linux, I have never installed Linux on ThinkPad so I am not sure. My hard drive is 60GB. But space of C drive is only 52GB after format. Few GB are missing. Those are the recovery partition.

yeah - i too have a r50p- and agree with sitti...

Sitti:
I have an R50p and have an issue that I have tried to resolve for weeks. I thought perhaps it was a bad install of Windows XP and was preparing to re-install when the hard drive crashed. Called support and got a set of recovery CD's and new hard drive lickity split. After re-setup, same issue. I called them yesterday and they are clueless.

Here is the issue.

If I click on My Network Places and then View Workgroup Computers my computer will never display of other computers in the workgroup. Eventually, I will have to close the screen and tell it to endtask because it has stopped responding. We have a number of Thinkpads including T40p's, T41p's, and R40's and this is the only one that has this problem. If I type the computer name and shared drive name in the address bar it will connect with the computer without issue, but it will never show me a list of computers in the workgroup. IBM has no clue and sent me another set of recovery CD's that they claim are more current than the ones they sent me 2 weeks ago and they said you can try and re-install everything again and see if that fixes it. There's a day of lost productivity... at least!

The tech guy was very nice about the whole thing and informed me that IBM's help desk doesn't even have a knowledgebase for them to reference. He said it really makes it tough to know if and how many other people have the same problem.

Anyhow, I was just wondering if you have the same issue.

I have an R50P with a small home office network and I have no problem seeing the other wired machines on the network all in the same workgroup. They are there every time. That is a weird one.
Thanks for your reply PDCjonny. Yes, it is indeed a weird one. I'd like to say it's a conflict with some software that I have installed, but to be honest, I have a T41p that I use as a backup that has virtually the same programs and data on it and it works perfectly. At this point, I can only wonder why.

BTW, if anyone with an R50p or T41p wants a set of recovery CD's, I'd be happy to send them to them because IBM sent me another set. Just let me know where to send them and I'll put them in the mail. You might want to email me.

this goes for the t41 but i assume it is the same for the other thinkpads:

the "hidden" partition can be setup to be seen in the bios... you can even get rid of it and get yourself 3GB of space...

the recovery (i hate to use that word!) cds i just got today do not have a a full version of xp on a single disk.. its all intertwined into a one big mess...

Interesting. I'm kinda newb at this so bear with me. I do not like junk companies put on their laptops for productivity or whatnot. I already removed alot but I'm not sure what to remove and what not and it's still kinda dragging (40+ processes on boot). If I reinstall with a clean non IBM XP Pro, I could use my Pro CDKEY on the bottom correct?? Then I could just find driver's for the various parts?? (would just using windows update work for that??? + omega driver's for the video card). Also for things like having onscreen display when volume is changed etc. Is that an IBM driver type thing?? (should I look for it on IBM support?)
I just did a clean XP install on my T41 and you will need to download some of the drivers from the IBM website. I believe I did the following:

from IBM website:
Intel chipset inf update
IBM Radeon 9000 video drvier
Intel Pro 2100 Wireless driver
LAN 10/100/1000 driver
IBM Ultranav driver
IBM Hotkeys driver (if you want the on screen display stuff)

from Windows update:
SoundMax driver
Modem driver

I believe that's it. I tried to only install the things that I needed and keep the background tasks to a minimum. If you wanted, I'm sure you could find tons of more helper apps to install from the IBM driver downloads (key remapper, battery manager, etc).

Is the Windows XP cdkey on the bottom different type than normal?? I didn't have a clean cd so I used my friend's cd (normal cd bought through university) and tried to use my cd key but that does not work... both are Pro

I am not having the problem you are having. I don't have any idea, why you are having this problem. Have you tried the windows' default driver?

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/si...validate=false

put in your exact model number and it will give you all the downloads available for your laptop. You can filter them by drivers, bios ,etc. I am planning on wiping my t40p this weekend and getting the drivers i need off there. I was able to delete the recovery partition using a knoppix cd. You said the cdkey on the bottom doesnt work for reg xp pro, hmph that sucks.
