8887 Overheating Problem

Before I start Yes I have Been keeping the Heat sink clean, in fact I cleaned it again this afternoon just in case (was still clean).

On the problem, Recently I've started having a bad problem with my 8887 Overheating, it seems to do it even under very little load.

I have no idea what the cause is, sometimes it will do it when I'm Playing a Game and sometimes when I'm typing up an e-mail, surfing the net or working on something in notepad, what I'm doing seems to have no effect on it.

Symptoms of it overheating goes like this, First I notice a dramatic Decrease in performance (down to PIII 500MHz & lower levels) then I get bad Artifacting on the screen, if I let it go longer than that the entire PC will lock up and even If I reset it Windows won't even Load unless I let it cool off for at least 1 hour...

Any input on this will be useful, I just hope it isn't what i think it is....

For system Spec, see my Sig...

Have you removed the heat pipes from the top of the CPU and then cleaned the old "gink" off of it, and applied a bit of AS-5 for the heat transfer. If you haven't, I'd recommend going that route and see what happens. If the thermal compunds between the heat pipes and the CPU have been disturbed, then erratic "overheating" is generally the result. Or...if you have done this, do it again, because it may not have been done correctly the last time.

Please keep us posted..

Did that the day it arrived in the mail 4 years ago.

Hasn't overheated today yet but it is running hot (despite the AC keeping the Abient temp at about 70F) all I've been doing with it is some light Internet use, I have some word files & Flash work to do but i'm affraid to try, the last time I started either app the thing overheated & locked up on me & took nearly 3hr's till it would start up again...

I think that you missed my central point. So I'll just come right out and say it.

Do what you did 4 years ago all over again and see if that helps.

Found the problem, it's not the CPU that's overheating, it's the GPU and RAM
it's never done this before and has ran better than this in hotter ambient temperatures.

Everything around the RAM anf GPU is clean and dust free so I have no idea why they are running this hot...

*sigh* mabie i'll pull the thing appart tomarow and see if I can spot anything and mabie put some artic silver on the GPU heatsink...

Do you have a small fan to the left of the RAM banks?
Does it work?
Have you made sure it's dust free as well?

No but their is a square hole in the mobo to the right of the ram banks with what looks like a fan underneath.

Update:

Put some Artic Silver on the GPU heatsink and my 8887 is running a lot cooler now, but I am still getting a LOT of artifacting on the screen which is progressively getting worse.

I have tried different video drivers (even the Original ones) and even a Reformat, none of which have helped any.

I'm getting a bad feeling that my GPU is about to bite the dust....
