The Importance of Bluetooth

I'm a high school graduate who will be attending college in the fall, and so i'm looking for a new laptop. I will use it to write papers, do image editing in photoshop, play some games etc. I'm looking at the ASUS a8jm, which comes with and without bluetooth. My question however isn't really specific to that notebook, and replies don't necessarily have to be specific to my particular circumstances.

I'm just wondering how important integrated bluetooth is. Do you use it often? Would you miss it? Would it be worth $100 to you?

I imagine I'll use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, possibly sync to my phone with it...and I'm out of uses, but can anyone think of anything else?

I use bluetooth with mine literally all the time. I use a bluetooth mouse (logitech mx900) cuz I HATE touchpads. I would ...have to think about paying $100, but in the end I'd probably go for it. If having the mouse without a dongle is important to you go for it. if not... well then it's a question only you can answer. good luck.

i think of it as a nice thing to have, but totally not required.

if you have a pda, you can sync it via iR, USB or BT....

if you transfer files to and from your cell, you prolly got a usb cable and that BT although again nice, not required.

in regards to mice:
Much like dr.louis, i hate touchpads (love eraserheads though) and for a while i used an iR mouse (my lappy has no bt) and i found that wireless mice are just not good enough...you constantly have to mind the battery, if you're a busy person on the go you'll find it annoying, so for the road i highly suggest a USB mini mouse, i use one by iogear and its really nice, and small so i just take it with me if i need it. you can check it out here.

so in other words, my overall 2 cents on BT, its a nice feature, sure... but you really can live without it just fine.

i wish i had bluetooth on mine... id sync up my phone alot... and possible.. wireless headsets for music...

im not sure about the mouse... last time i checked.. people told me its slow and laggy... for gaming atleast

I use a bluetooh mouse on the go all the time... I can't live without one but for $100 it doesn't sound like its worth that much. Perhaps around $50 I would say yes... I also synch my cell phone and use my cell phone as a remote control. I hate dongles...

BT mouse is no longer slow or laggy especially if you go for a good make such as M$ and Logitech. I have a trust BT Mouse but I'm getting a Logitech v270 for good battery life.

bluetooth wouldnt probably help you with photoshop or games but it would help with resale value. it would also help if you ever plan on getting bt headphones, printer etc.
ps ez2remember...how much battery life do you get with your current bt mouse?

At the moement with my Trust BT Mouse I get about 20-30hrs of use which equates to about 2 weeks for me. I heard the Logitech v270 last about 3 months which uses higher capacity AA batteries compared to AAA batteries currently used by my Trust.

I will also be attending college in the fall and JUST bought a new laptop a week ago. Bluetooth was a no-brainer for me. I don't mind touchpads but am much more efficient with a regular mouse and also need it to play games that I enjoy. For me, using a wireless mouse with either a USB stick or wired receiver hanging out of my laptop was not an option. Bluetooth solved this issue for me but it has other uses. I also use it to connect to my cell phone and use the phone as a modem in places that don't have wifi. I'm sure that more uses will present themselves in the future as well.

how about using a regular WIRED mouse? a cheaper more effective solution i think since you dont have to mind the batteries all the damn time.

actually, for photoshop the mouse is lightyears better than the touchpad. However abf has a good point, which I alluded to in my previous post - bluetooth is great if you want to avoid the dongles. If a dongle (or cord) doesn't matter much I think you'd be better off with a wired mouse. My laptop travels a lot, and I really appreciate not having to plug anything in to use my mouse so for me it makes sense, for you it may or may not. Only you can make the call.

Nice toy but not a 100 dollar toy if you ask me. If you find out you need it later you can always buy a USB Dongle for about 20~50 buck at newegg.

Not worth it. You can get a bluetooth USB dongle for $7 shipped. Is it really worth $93 extra to not have to deal with a little dongle for something you're not even sure you're going to use?

Its where I ordered mine from back when it was $10. May take a while to ship as it comes from Hong Kong. Mine got here in about a week and a half. Works fine. A lot of other people have ordered from there as well. I frequent HardForums where someone posted it a long time ago.

I have bluetooth in my laptop and I dont think that I could live without it. I have a V270 mouse that I use with it and it SO much easier than using a wired mouse or a dongle. With the V270 I dont have to worry about batteries one bit. With the batteries that came with it I got 6 months of use, the mouse was always on and probably used 5 hours a day. The only time I turn it off is when i put it in my bag to go somewhere (not often). Even when they died the computer told me days in advance that the batteries were low!

$100 is alot though, I think mine was ~$40. Does it come bundled with somthing else like upgraded wireless?

Does that relly have a 100M range? mine is more like 100ft, I think it would be hard to see the cursor from that far away. lol

Bluetooth comes in either 10M or 100M. Think about applications like audio devices playing music from your computer several meters away.
