Getting back to the 125 degrees lid opening, I really don't think it was a design flaw. I think it was more of a protection thing as putting your lid back anymore then 125 degrees adds stress to the hinges.

Vikingjunior,

You are absolutely right, I see no way that a 125 degree span could be construed as a design flaw. How often would 99% of notebook users need to have the screen parallel to the keyboard? The only time I could see it being necessary was if you were standing up typing on a keyboard that was on a low table. But I could be totally wrong, there might be millions of people using their notebooks in millions of ways that require the display to be parallel with the keyboard.

HP probably limited the range of the lid to help prevent damage to the LCD. If the lid opened 180 degrees and pressure was put on the lid that pressure would probably translate to pressure on the LCD and the case of the notebook which might cause damage. If the lid opens to 125 degrees additional pressure is likely focused more on the hinges than on the LCD or case. And I would assume it has to be cheaper to replace broken hinges than it is to replace a damaged LCD or case.

It also reduces the amount of wear and tear on the ribbon cable to the lcd.

For that matter, how many of you actually open your notebook to 180 degrees? I have only once and that was while cleaning the lcd screen, but it wasn't necessary to do so.

Wow, that's great. Only one part I am afraid of: "Airline regulators have also become alarmed and may ban laptops in planes."

HP batteries aren't made by Sony...

I don't think the replacement for the 8000Z is attractive one bit! Not to mention they placed the audio in/out ports in the front center of the machine (thats a big NO NO)...they just went from an excellent product with the 8000Z to a drug induced mistake!

I was scared there for a sec when I saw this but now I'm a happy camper I ordered.

I agree and that silver palm rest is very sticky.

dv9000(z) now listed on the Costco.com site.

Just configured a dv9000z and a dv8000z, both with base cpu, XP PRO, everything the same except 9000 using a 5,400 sata, the dv8000z using a 7,200 ide.

dv9000z = $1,652.99

dv8000z = $1,156.99

Looks like HP is mighty proud of that new Lightweight magnesium alloy, fully armored housing with the hard drives "shock mounted". ...

Opps I mean "plastic" case, with the additon of a $20 webcam.

Hope these 9000z's are shipping with a HDMI port! (doubt it as it's listed as being an "option on select models" in the Maintance and Service Guide)

I checked out the dv2000 at Staples, and it seems really "girly". Very flimsy case, very flexible screen. I don't like it. I think the 8000 series would last much longer.

Yes, the 9000z's all have HDMI ports on them, it has already been confirmed multiple times. Let's put that fact to rest

Confirmed?

I haven't heard anyone thats received a dv9000z confirm this yet. Demo shows it, demo saying:
"HDMI port - select models".

Select, or full featured models meaning to HP the Intel cpu'd machines if they do the same as they've done before. Intel chipped machines being spec'd higher...

Just checked the Maintance and Service Guide.

On page 1-8 it shows a picture, but on page 1-9, item #7 it says:
" HDMI port
(select models only)
Connects an optional audio or video device
such as a high-definition television, set-top
box, DVD player, or any compatible digital
or audio device.

Weird that HP is not playing this feature up... DVI /HDMI port enabling you to directly connect to a big screen tv/plasma, projector.. Or to a DVI computer panel. I think this is the FIRST DVI port on a HP consumer laptop so I find it very strange no real mention is being made of this new feature.

Pretty big news considering only a few other mfg's models on the market have it. (them costing I think about a $1,000more)

Graphics card section makes no mention of it either.

PS: When I made the comment I was joking.... of course for $500 more it's going to have a HDMI port standard. It's got to.... Of course that's going to be "On Select models only".

Dv6000 manual shows the HDMI port, it also having the wording "on select models" with no mention of the HDMI port on the "Demo".... Addtionally from posts I've seen from dv6000z owners (unless I've missed it) no-one has said their dv6000z came with an HMDI port and there is NO option to "add" that option when ordering so the HDMI port may indeed be only on the (t) series machines.

PS: The above being said I hope they put a HDMI port in every shipping unit as that lowers the cost.

And my post just above that one points out that the specs page just lists 1 HDMI port, no "on select models".

YES, I saw that.... HP rep telling you that. Great if it's so, but still not a confirmation from someone that has received one. HP rep was just reading off the website the specs.

Here's a tip off that it may indeed have the HDMI port:

432945-001
$571.00

System board (motherboard) - For use only with computer models using AMD processors (full-featured)

Note where it says "Full Featured".

I have a quick question. I want to buy an HP laptop for gaming. What do you all think is the best route to take? Go Intel Core Duo or AMD Turion (i.e.-8000 or 9000 series laptop). Any help would be appreciated :-) Thank you.

Think you should around on which CPU is better on gaming... Especailly since the AMD cpu is new to the market... and no-one here has both a dv9000z and a dv9000t to run benchmarks on. From everything I've read the Core Duo 2 is still king. For Gaming the GPU is the more important, if you're gaming I'd go with a DELL 1705 with the 7900GS GPU.... with a Core Duo. If you wait a little longer the Core Duo 2's will be out. Dell has a replaceable GPU, nice if you happen to overclock it and fry it... HP intergrates their GPU's into the motherboard, so if one goes the whole motherboard has to be replaced. 7900GS also has DVI out...magnesium alloy upper LCD lid (nice if something is "dropped" on top of the unit), Lower housing being of magnesium alloy also. Seems Dell is a better company to deal with on repairs, Dell in allot of cases shipping major parts directly to you (if you prefer)... Having next day type on site repair. That's the impression I get from reading allot on the Dell board. Link to how the various GPU's rate against each other: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread157799.html
