Possible Bad HD Controller

Thread Starter
Is there any way to tell if the hard drive controller is dead? Its either theres a problem with the motherboard or the hard drive is corrupted and I need to buy another one. My warranty is over on my 9880 and the BIOS detects the Hard Drive, but fujitsu diagnostic software, low level formater, and windows cd do not detect the hard drive. Is there anyway to tell if its the hard drive or mobo. My warranty is out, and its cheaper to order a 120gig hd from new egg, then send mylaptop both ways (not including the service charge) for them to replace the HD.

The only way for sure is o try your hardrive in another computer if you have a desktop pc you can buy a 2,5" to 3.5" ide converter if you have a sata drive then you might be able to just use a standard sata cable im not sure though as i havent got a 2,5" sata drive to look at, then plug it into your desktop pc then see if it swhows up in windows explorer

This is why I like Linux Live CD's. Could be a loose cable or BIOS problem as well I think. Another alternative is to buy a cheap $15 external enclosure (pay attention to SATA/PATA) and try using the drive through USB. At least that would eliminate the drive as the cause of failure.

The BIOS is detecting the HDDs so are you using the Promise Drivers to access the HDDs booting from the Windows CD.

Manufacturer disk diagnostic utilities typically bypass the OS booting independently from a floppy or CD using drive info provided by the BIOS. Just because the drive is recognized by the BIOS doesn't mean that there can't be corruption in the BIOS data tables. It's probably either the MB, the HD, or the controller cable. The hard drive is easy to eliminate.
