spilled water on keyboard

ahh.. Don't get mad, I see the post below with similar topic, but wanted to make my own since it might not get read in in the middle of another topic and didn't want to be rude hijacking someone else's post.

I got a splash of water on my Gateway MX7515 notebook's keyboard last night. It actually didn't seem like alot. Turned off the notebook and I thought I got most of the water off with a paper towel. Didn't look like any got into the vents or anything and I know theres some plate under the keyboard so thought it would be ok. Well, this morning I tried to turn it on and I see the lights on it go on, light on the CD drive goes on and I see the thing on under the touchpad that tells you the harddrive is going but the screen isn't turning on at all. Wondering what I should do and does it sound savable? Leave it off for a few days, try turning it on again and hook it up to a TV/external monitor, open it up and see if theres any water around? I read posts about people spilling things and sounds like alot more then what I spilled and thier notebook work fine, so I'm hoping...

Water that happens to get into very tiny spaces take a long time to evaporate.

Try blow drying. And have patience.

Otherwise, you can try opening the laptop up and seeing what's going on in there...

I had tee spilled on normal, not notebook keyboard on one of my jobs. I got replacement, but drying took more then weeek, if I'm not mistaken. And even after that, just drying may not be enouth, because residue after water evaporation may prevent contact (that is if nothing burned). I'd read recommendation, before the drying to rinse it with clean (better distilled) water - the recommendation was about all the notebook. So I think it should be stesp by step - dry, if not working rinse, dry again, if not working dissasemble notebook, rinse affected part and dry again. Of cause system or some parts could already be irrevocably damaged.

ok;I opened it up. it looked dry and I didn't see any water. I know it's bad to keep trying to turn it on, so should I just leave it for a week? What part would be stopping the screen from turning on? Video card? Hard drive?

update: Turns on now, I'm so happy. Was starting to get buggy not being able to play WoW. Next notebook I get will have accidental damage coverage on it.

Blow dry it. Then put it away for a day or two. Then repeat. Then try it out. Better safe than sorry.

My opinion.

The more you keep trying to turn it on, the more you risk shorting something out. That's what kills 99% of cellphones after people drop them in the sink, toilet, puddle, etc. They try to turn them on to see if they work before completely dry. Water + power = short circuit and fried electrical device.

I agree. I spilled some soda on my system a few months back, and about 1 month later (no joke, it took that long) the screen wouldn't turn on. I really had to clue as to what was going on, but it turns out the cpu/motherboard was fried and this was probably due to a combination of a water spill and overheating.

Sucks, but I couldn't do anything about it since it had already been almost 2 years. I bought a new laptop yesterday and I'm going to try and have a cover over my keyboard or not drink anything while using the system.
