New hard drives, RAID, SATAII, enclosures, questions

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I've been reading this forum for several months now and finally have a question which I would like to ask in a new thread.

I bought a maxed out M90 from BlueDevils (excellent seller) several weeks ago and have already used up the 100gb HD. I've been looking around at storage options and have come accross the SIIG SC-SAE612-S1 expresscard which supports RAID 0 and 1. It is an SATA II expresscard so i'm looking to pair it up with 2 Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YD 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives to run in RAID0. I'm assuming this will work.

The problem I'm facing is with finding enclosures to house these with support for SATA II. Maybe I'm missing something when looking around but it seems all the enclosures on Newegg that are in the $25-$45 price range support SATA I which is 1.5Gb/s such as AZiO or E-POWER Is it possible to run an SATA II HD in one of these SATA I enclosures at the speed of SATA II? Is the 3.0Gb/s data rates more theoretical than life-like results? Also, how important is it for an HD enclosure to have a fan? Any opinions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I like the idea of working in RAID0 so I want to try that out. Overall I'm looking for 250gb+ of fast storage (non USB...). I think I know what I'm talking about but if I'm completely wrong on this whole topic please correct me. I have up to a $350 budget for this project.

Thank you,
Kevin

Wow, great find!
I guess we now have to wait for the enclosues.

Although, you could easily build your own enclosure to house multiple drives with an ATX PSU (I plan to go this route).
