Another one I remember is Tweakui for Windows XP, it allows user to set menu speed, which is unexplainably NOT setup at ZERO from Microsoft... That´s JUST what I was looking for, as I will use the note on my bed and this way the air flow from under will be blocked! But it´s expensive... Shipping to Brazil would be 56,90, almost the same price of the ilap. Thanks Melo
Hi Melo, Tweak UI is another must have on a XP install. I wouldn't bev without it. Mark Russinovitch is somewhat of a celebrity as his free program Rootkit Revealer helped shine light on Sony's use of rootkits to hide their Digital Rights Management Protection software that they sneaked onto several Audio CD's they market. Mark was testing a new version of Rootkit Revealer on a machine he had previously played a Sony Audio CD on. When his program showed a rootkit on his machine he checked further and discovered that the act of playing the CD installed a program on his machine that was hidden by a root kit. There is info at his web site about this. Check out ProcessExplorerNt at his site. It's a little program that is much like Windows task manager. But better. You unzip to the folder of your choice and make a shortcut to the .exe and place the shortcut in your startup menu. Then in options within the program check "Hide when Minimized" and "CPU history in System Tray". The program will startup with Windows and a little icon will be in system tray which will show CPU activity at a glance in real time. If you click on it it opens up and shows active processes etc. My machine rarely gets to max 130° F. around touchpad. For example I just measured after 1 hour uptime. 107° F on touchpad itself. 99° F on right and left. I don't consider that too hot. My CPU temp is 122° F and the HDD is 111° F. The iLap cost me $50.00 US at my local CompUsa one of many large computer chains here in the states. But it is great tool for this machine. I don't suppose you have an Apple store near you? This device is marketed to the Apple iMac powerbook crowd.

Im sorry, but he being too mellodramatic about the heat. It doesn't get THAT hot; and the heat is only bad when you cover the bottom vent fan. If the laptop gets decent air, it wont drastically heat up..

I agree about being overly dramatic. But I am sure there are some
units in circulation that do get excessivly hot. That's a problem for the factory
to fix. Again I am carefully monitoring mine and temps are well behaved.
I don't know what the source of the heat around and on the touchpad is.
It is either the touchpad itself or the video subsystem which is under the
touchpad. Or both. I don't use my touchpad, prefering a Logitech G-7 mouse and I don't use ATi stock Catalyst program, prefering the Omega drivers
instead.

Is there a way to control the fan speed to have it run faster to keep the lappy cooler? I don't mind giving up some battery performance for a cooler notebook.

I downloaded Notebook Hardware Control, but it says "next release" for any fan controls.

there's a program I saw mentioned in Hp/compaq section of forums for it...

That is a nice kapotop deal indeed...

I also wanted to ask about the 5102 wLmi which I think I think is a pretty good deal too... at circuit city...

Only thing the 5672 has is another gig of ram and better video...

I was considering the hp8301 at best buy but that has about 3 hours of battery and same performance as this junk Ltop emachines 6811.

Other then that, the 2 acers seem to have decent builds...

tho the 5102 is the amd 64bit x2 50 proc.. Kinda wish someone would offer some opinions on the 5102 but thats for another thread.

Lol. The touchpad thing is way overexaggerated unless they really do have something wrong with theirs. Mine I would say is somewhere around 85ish. I always use a wireless mouse wherever I go anyways so it dosent matter.

same one but with XP Pro at JR.com (NYC) for $999. little known but good site. (120GBHDD, 2GB DDR2)

130F was what a previous poster (I'm too lazy to see who, sorry) said his touchpad was reaching. Also, I felt it in the store, idling and it was uncomfortable. It was sitting, running at like 3% CPU usage on a metal shelf with holes in it. I cannot think of a better ventilation situation, other than an actual laptop cooler. It was not painfully hot, but I don't think something's painfully hot until it's about 160 degrees or so (the temp dishes come out of the washer at the restaurant I work at). I believe the previous poster's measurement was accurate, based on what I know about what different temperatures feel like. It really eats me up too, because I love everything about this laptop, except the unacceptable heat. Now, I realize those laptops run for a long time, but as a student, I too will demand my computer run for a long time as I do homework, etc.

It certainly is frustrating that I'll have to spend 300 dollars more to get a similar laptop without this problem.

got mine for $900 (no rebate or what so ever) at compusa. I had to called like 10 stores to find a store that has it in stock. It well worth my effor i guess. I love my 5672

Yeah, I dropped by or local store (Little Rock, Ark, on Bowman road) this afternoon, and they still had them in stock with a clearance tag price of $899. Saleslady told me they had to get rid of the last few before they could get in the new model that replaces it.

I still like it and intend to keep it in spite of the sudden drop in price.

New model is probably Merom with ATi radeon X1600 GPU. Yeah I paid $1600.00 for mine. I plan on changing my processor to a 2GHz Merom as soon as I can lay hands on one, I already have the BIOS update to support it. I too love this machine.

I own a 5672, have for about 2 months now. the 2gig X1400 version.

You can convert the file system to NTFS with a DOS command, I can't remember EXACTLY how to do it..

If you're getting a laptop, ANY laptop, I suggest a laptop cooler if you plan on using it with any regularity or on any surface not hard IE: your lap, a bed, a pillow, etc... I've got the Antec one, and like it alot. If you travel with it, get one of the targus or other brand backpacks or cases to carry it and the cooler around.

My laptop gets warm, but I wouldn't say it gets hot. Then again I don't use the touchpad, I use a MX518 mouse that works on just about any surface I put it on, table, bedsheet, leg, doesn't matter.

I too love this machine.

I just replaced my T2250 with a Merom T7400 yesterday, and its a BOM
runned Sisandra and I was amazed by its result, I think I'm going to make a small review with benchmark.
I still need to format and get rid of the FAT32, but already its lightning fast

Any issues with the install? What did you use for the heat paste?
no issue, you just have to unscrew the total heatsink that is covering the GPU, CPU and chipset.
for paste I just some kinda silver-paste, not really a brand, but used alot in shop and never seem to have problems.
