light leakege on my new m1710

So, I got my new m1710 a few days ago, and it is awesome, except for the screen, It had some pretty bad light leakege along the bottom, so I chatted with dell on the internet and they sent a guy out with a new screen really fast, but the new screen has the same problem, although it is not as bad.

Should I try again? or just deal with it, its not that bad I guess, but after spending so much I sort of want the screen quality to match the ability of the machine ya know?
The first one was the model from Sharp, not sure about the new one, but I assume it is the same.

Its noticeable mostly in games, the bottom 1" of the screen is noticeably brighter then the rest.

Also, when looking down at the screen, if it’s on a low table or something, it’s really obvious.

It isn’t a whole lot brighter, but it can be really apparent at times.

Do a check on the screen they sent you. I bet you it's a refurb Samsung that is meant for XPS2/9300 systems. Dell doesn't seem to have any M1710 screens on hand for tech support so they're using their old garbage. I requested an M1710 screen four times and each time it got cancelled due to being out of stock so finally they had to send me a new system.

What is officially considered "an M1710 screen"? Dell sent me a Samsung (SEC3155) to replace my Sharp. After reading ad nauseum on this topic, it seems that LG is the screen to get. But, how to get one?

Is the SEC3155 from Samsung not a M1710 screen?

its the same type of monitor, SEC...etc is its name in the monitor info. Did I get unlucky twice, or is this a common problem?

That's the correct one, I'm surprised they sent you that. They've been sending out SEC5557 to other people which is the older less bright XPS Gen2/9300 screen. However Samsung for this generation seem to be the worst screens out of the three and most people seem to be happier with Sharp or LG. If my Sharp didn't have dead pixels it would be perfect since it has 0 leakage.

Aren't you bothered by the narrow viewing angles of the Sharp? I mean, when looking at a full screen display, mostly white (I read Zinio digital magazines, for instance), and centered on the display, the left and right sides of the screen are noticably darker, and I find myself moving my head left and right in order to be able to clearly see the screen.

Viewing angles are great on the Sharp I have. I can sit to the side and look at it and lose very little picture detail.

I have the exact same problem and mine is also a sharp. A one inch thick light leackage along bottom, and 2 dead pixels, its to bad cuz the rest of the screen is beatiful. Im afraid to call dell up cuz i might just get a worse screen. What screens ahve they been giving out in the us for repairs?

oh, So I guess both times Ive gotten the new samsung, SEC3155, i havnt been very happy with either of them, but how could I request a different one? Or should I just stick with it? I have a 4 year compleate care+acc. damage warranty, so I guess I have time.

I dunno keep requesting it as many times as you want until you get a good display. There should be no compromises with such an expensive system. Look at Dell's Alienware division, they ship out systems with no dead pixels so why can't Dell do the same?

ok, so I talked with Dell again, and the guy oes to research the issue and says that the new "20% brighter technology"causes uneven light distribution, so the monitor is working as it should, so there is nothing he can do about it.

so, i guess i am stuck with it.

Excuse my noobish question here but how does one know what brand the LCD screen attached to their laptop is??

Thanks in advance for any answers. Good luck with your light leakage problem.

Use a different excuse. Not like they'd know.

Ah, thanks, I figured that but wondered if there was a faster way. LOL

I have the Sharp 13c1 and no dead pixels, that I can see anyway, and the lighting seems beautiful and uniform. Guess I got lucky.

You sure did. I've got a sharp as well with beautiful uniform lighting, great viewing angles and such but dead pixels

You know, I never noticed it before but when Materazzi falls from that head-butt (in your sig), he kicks up at Zinedine as he does so. Not that I blame him though...LOL
