Question about reformatting...

Thread Starter
I want to reinstall Windows on my laptop (see sig for specs) but I want to do so without all the bloatware Dell adds. The discs I got from them was Operating System, Drivers and Utilities, and Applications. I know how to reformat on a desktop but with a laptop I am confused. How would I handle certain things a laptop needs like the scroll on the touchpad? Would that work with a clean install of Windows or do I need special drivers from Dell?

Sorry I am just really confused and what I want is my laptop with none of this trash extra software. Just Windows and what I need for my laptop to function.

Visit http://support.dell.com/ and put in your service tag, select Drivers and Downloads, and you're good to go.

Don't forget to ask Dell for a Windows XP reinstall CD.

To the OP, basiclly download all the drivers from Dell before you start... On a fresh Xp install it should pick up most stuff, maybe installing generic drivers. To gain full use of a piece of hardware (such as the touchpad you were concerned about) You're going to have to install the software for it. What I do is after I get the OS up, (without any special drivers) I image it, make a backup copy using a external hard drive. (An "IMAGE" that can be restored in MINUTES!!!) Then I install the drivers, make another image, install the apps make another image so I can go back to any point. This external hard enclosure comes bundled with an OEM copy of Arconis True Image.... very useful program: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...624855?ie=UTF8 Currently you can get the USB version here for only $24.99... which btw is a VERY good price. Description is for the DTC as in the above review by me , but it's the DT... USB 2.0 model EDIT Jun1, 2006 here is the CORRECT link: http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=294942
