WOW

I need your help guys and girls. This notebook has caught my attention because it is the smallest notebook that I have seen with its power. Is there no other notebook like it? Is sony really the only one putting out notebooks this small with this much power?

Please if you know of any others let me know... but they must have...

P-M
Optical Drive (Modular or Fixed it doesnt matter)
and be this small! or smaller.
Dedicated Graphics... doesnt matter if its a R-M 9000 or a 7500

This might be the one I have been waiting for.

For a thousand dollars less you could get a Panasonic Toughbook, but it has integrated graphics...

For the same price you could get a Dell X300 which is a full half-inch thinner but also has integrated graphics...

Ahh here's one! The IBM X series.
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...oryId=2072542#

EDIT: Hmm it seems the IBM one doesn't have a built in optical drive. Okay yeah well I guess the V505 is your only choice then haha.

I was actually really considering it, but it's been out for so long; it's outdated, and it's extremely underpowered for the price, more so than the Alienware Sentia. The 12" screen can also wear on your eyes after a while. The one thing that made it so difficult for me was the awesome feel of its full metal chassis, and its sheer beauty. Ohhh maaaaaan... haha =)

Didnt you see that it has to have an optical drive?

And besides that the W2 toughbook costs 2099. The Sony starts off at 1700 and therefore the W2 is more expensive, only has a 1Ghz (or is it 900 mhz?) P-M while the Sony has a 1.4-1.7 and the W2 has no dedicated graphics like you saw.

In fact Amazon has them right now for 1600 with a 100 dollar mail in rebate. The IBM X series does not have an integrated optical drive, and neither does the Dell.

Thanks but I had already seen all of those, and none had that which the Sony has. But please dont stop looking! I have spent the last month or two searching and searching and I think the V505DX is the only one.

Yeah you're absolutely right. I would however suggest that you wait a little longer because that V505 has been out for quite some time now. I'm sure Sony will be updating it with better graphics and processor.

In the review that I posted under WOW in my first post... you can see a comparison of the prices of the V505DX. You say I can get a toughbook for 1000 less? Wow if i can get a toughbook for 700 dollars!!!! please tell me where! I would jump on that deal anytime!

In regards to upgrading the processor... I dont think they will be doing that any time soon. The 505DX already goes all the way to 1.7 and the new Dothan wont be out till a couple of months. I really did want to wait for Dothan but after 2 (or was it 3) delays... ill have to pass it up and buy it some other time.

The V505 is (and has been for at least the past three months) $2500. The Toughbook was $1500 when I last saw it.

EDIT: Canadian dollars btw.

You saw the Toughbook for $2099?! USD?! You sir, are being COMPLETELY ripped off, where are you shopping?!

Hmm... Fujitsu has been selling a similar model that for years (wonder where the sony designer got their "inspiration") based on the Transmeta Crusoe 5800 . They just redid this model (1000 series is the old one and 5000 series is the new one) with a PM but I don't know what type of graphics it has.

Oh haha I see I didnt know about the Canadian dollars. Well I did a quick conversion and it seems as if the v505 is now 2,258.29 CAD, while it is 2,125.45 CAD at amazon.com

What toughbook are you talking about? The only toughbook that I have seen that is an ultraportable is the Panasonic Toughbook W2, which has an optical drive under the circular thumbpad.

The two that you might have been thinking about are these

Which doesnt have a CD Drive

Which Does have a DVD/CDRw

The lowest price for the W2 is 2,835.78 CAD... not 1000 dollars less than the v505

John thanks for the reply. Yeah I looked at the Fujitsu P5000 too. If you head over here you can see the thread that I made in that forum.

I am currently debating between the two, especialy since the P5000 can be upgraded to a 7200 rpm hd, and can hold a battery in the modular bay to last 11 hours, and plus is smaller than the v505DX.

This review of the Sony v505DX which was written on the 15th of January of 2004, states that the suggested retail price is $1,899.

So... if the suggested retail price was 1,899 about a month ago... then that means it was 2,522.78 CAD.

So in that you were correct. It is 2,500 CAD, but now it has gone down a little more.

Enderet I remember distinctly upon entering the computer department at a local store:

-a super small notebook the size of a V505
-the price for said notebook being roughly $1500
-thinking that I might have just made the biggest mistake in my life for getting the F3000 if this thing was for real (because I was on the verge of getting the Sony)
-on closer inspection discovering that it had a 900MHz processor
-turning away in a mix of disgust and relief

In fact, I'm going to go out for a bite in a sec, and I'll be going by that place anyway.

I'll bring my digicam and take a pic of the notebook along with the price.

Remember that is uses the Centrino processor. Which is not clock for clock the same as a P4. For a "rough" guide multiply the centrino by 1.5 to 1.8 to get it's PR rating (like the 2500+ in your acer is not a 2.5ghz cpu, but has a PR rating of 2.5 and an actual speed of around 1.8)
So the PR rating of a 900mhz centrino would be 1.45 to 1.62, which while not super fast is also not super slow.

I realize that but even an overpriced laptop like the Alienware Sentia has a P-M 1.7GHz for the same price.

Lets see... the lowest spec'ed Sentia, right here goes for 1,742.00 US, which translates to 2,320.05 CAD

These are the specs for it:

Alienware Exclusive Case
Intel® Centrino Technology
Intel® Pentium-M Processor 1.4Ghz
Intel® 855GM Chipset
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100
14.1" SXGA+ LCD Screen
256MB DDR PC2100
20GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
FREE! Secondary Battery

The lowest spec'ed 1.7 Sentia (since you said that the 1.7 Sentia was less expensive) is:

1992.00 US which = 2,653.24 CAD

Man what the F UCK are you talking about?! WHERE did I say that the Sentia was cheaper?

He's saying that the Toughbook is $2600 because it has a Pentium M, even though it's 900MHz. And I tell him the Sentia is the same price with a Pentium M @ 1.7GHz.

Seems you're nothing but a s hit disturber. I posted in this thread trying to help and you did nothing but attack me, spouting your bullsh it attitude.
