Just bought CSS and HL2, both run maxed out with HDR and 2xAA and AF.

Great games!

Hi! great review and questions being asked in this thread. I am definitely going to get either the S96j or the Z96j. theres just one thing: the screen resolution.

Honestly, I have no problem with either resolution (S or Z) it's just that theres a Black Friday deal on a 22" monitor and i need to know whether or not i can run the S96j in a dual monitor setup with this LCD. That is, if i got an S96j that has a screen with native res 1280x800 would i still be able to use a dual monitor setup with the monitor running at native 1680x1050? forgive me if this is a dumb question, i don't have much experience with the whole dual monitor thing.

i would love to save a few hundred bucks by getting the S96j instead of the Z96j, but if the external LCD won't run at 1680x1050 with the S96j then i'll just have to go with the Z96j.

Yes, it should work.

But you will have a to use a VGA cable, the X1600 is certainly capable of powering an external monitor at that resolution for normal tasks. Just dont expect to game well at 1680 x 1050 on the external monitor...

Thanks for posting this info. I play these games often and was looking at the S96j but didnt know how well it would to with them. Another question though, was it hard to intall the extra RAM or was it relatively simple? I will porbably upgrade mine after a while of having it even though i havent ordered it yet.
Guess i will order mine from gentech tomrrow after i put some money in the bank

It was very simple, although putting the RAM stick took me a little extra time because the empty slot on my S96J was next to the wireless module, so I didnt have much room to work in.

Im going to get an asus z96j next month.

the configuration:
T7200 2ghz core 2 Duo
2gb DDR @ 667mhz
100gb 7200rpm

I hope this machine to last me a while. im just tired of this acer haha, i can barely game here. i expect a decent bump in frames and quality.

I suppose with this machine i should be able to play everything right now huh?

one question, how overclockeable is this card? i dont plan on overclocking much, if at all, but i suppose if the time comes, when i could use some extra frames to keep a game playable... i would.

1. Yes, the X1600 256mb should provide a very decent boost in performance.

2. Yes. you can play everything now with at least medium if not high settings.

3. 500/400 is about as high as I dare to go.

The memory wont clock over 420mhz but the core does go up above 550mhz but I have no need for that as the core isnt as important as the memory anyways.

Is there any way to turn off the hypermemory in the S96J that boosts the X1600 to 512 MB RAM from the dedicated 256MB?
I dont want my X1600 stealing from my main RAM.
Also, when it got here from GenTech, the LCD panel had a thin piece of tape around the outer edges, can I pull that tape off or is it holding the glossy thing over my LCD?

1. Nope, you cant disable it. But dont worry, the X1600 really wont borrow much RAM if it runs out of its own video ram. (Not Fast Enough)

2. Of course you can remove any tape on it! Do you think they would sell a laptop with a glossy screen cover held on by tape! lol

The way that graphic works is that if you are gaming, it will automatically be using up ram to help render the graphics. So don't worry about the hypermemory ability, it really isn't anything special because all GPU's use system ram.

With regards to the plastic sheet over the screen, held by tape, that is there to further protect the screen. I do suggest that you keep it, pack up all the extra wrapping and stuff, put it back into the box, never know when you may need it. What I do with the sheet is take the tape and fold it over to the other side for all 4 corners and then make sure it don't bend, because the sheet of clear plastic is quite nice.

Yeah.

Anyways as an update everything is running fine and I expect to upgrade to Windows Vista Premium 32-bit once Vista's Service Pack 1 is released.

Hey I was thinking about getting this notebook for college. I have a few questions. Is it worth getting the 9 cell battery? Are the performance gains of a 7200 rpm HDD over a 5400 rpm worth the loss of battery life? What's better memory: Kingston or Corsair? Should I wait to purchase so the price will go down? Thanks in advance. Oh and if you feel like a little extra research: what TV Tuner do you recomend to go w/ this notebook, either USB or ExpressCard? Thanks.

1. Yes it is, because the included 6 cell barely gets 2:30. The 9 cell should it extend it to around 3:30 to 4:00, maybe more with wireless off.

2. The battery life loss would not be much, maybe 15 minutes. I would say its worth it.

3. Kingston and Corsair are both reputable memory manufacturers.

4. No, unless you want to wait for the new Santa Rose platform.

5. This seems to be good:

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Whats the Santa Rose Platform?
Also if I get the 9 cell battery pack from gentech does that come with the 6 cell?

Anyone know if the performance gain from a T2400 processor to a T7200 is worth the price? And how much 3dMark05/06 score and games fps do you think will I gain if i upgrade the processor?
