**I just bought an S96J Thread**

I saw the S96J Owner's Lounge at NBR, so I figured we should have one over here at NBF. Just a place for current owners/future owners of this laptop to discuss things pertaining to this model.

Just watched Serenity on it and the sound was incredible on my Sennheiser HD-205 heaphones. While not ozzingly gorgeous like some LCD TVs, the picture was better than on a Dell E1705. But, again, these babies are VBI, which means a better screen is just an easy upgrade away if we can get word that one is better than the others. If you take a stroll down the notebook aisle at Office Depot you'll see that the standard AUO screen is above average.

Also been gaming mostly CS:S and CoV and it feels like a high end desktop.

It just feels good to be using an Asus.

Sweet! I'm glad to hear that you like the screen. I haven't heard of too many problems that people have had with the screen, but a few people don't like it. Also that it plays those games is sweet. I have heard of all the benchmarks and stuff, but just to hear that it "feels" like a high end desktop is nice.

Im now waiting for mine. Ordered since the 26th so hopefully it will show up this week!! I want this notebook so then I can (GAME) get some stuff done..

The screen during fullscreen movies is a tiny bit grainy and slightly washed out. Maybe I need to mess with the players and settings. But the key is, sufficient brightness and response time are absolute non issues with this screen.

Still haven't heard of a single dead pixel report.

I have to agree with hyperluminous, the screen is simply gorgeous. I've been playing a lot of CS:S on my S96J and it rocks... well, except for the fact that it feels so different to play in widescreen.

No dead pixels either.

I cant wait to take a look at my screen, My laptop is arriving on thrusday. (well so UPS say's)

I just watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon on mine. I agree w/ hyperluminous ...somewhat grainy, mostly on panoramic scene shots. The audio on headphones rocks though.

Maybe a different player w/ better setting controls than the one that's bundled w/ Asus would work better? Pls post if anyone's got suggestions.

Did you run 3dmark on you're computer eiland yet?

I have been researching laptops for a couple months now, and I just seem to keep ending up back with the S96J. I also have considered the E1505/E1705. My desktop is getting old and glichy, and I think a laptop is probably going to be my next computer. I have been hesitant, because all my comps have been desktops, and in the past, laptops were way behind in technology, and very expensive for something that was outdated by the time the delivery company dropped it off at your door. That tech gap has been quickly closing, and I would really like the mobiliy of the laptop. Not really so much for outside of my home, but more for being able to move around the house, and not be tied down to one spot all the time. I am about ready to take the plunge, and this baby looks like best deal for the money right now.

Yeah, that was basically my conclusion too. It just seems to have the best price/performance ratio.

What DVD program is packaged with it?
It's PowerDVD with Asus name on it.

Wow Ken, nice response time!
Hmm, if it is PowerDVD, I wonder if it is the LCD that just makes movies look grainy. I have had great experiences with PowerDVD on my desktop. Oh well, this laptop isn't primarily for watching movies, so if it can do a decent job, I'm still thrilled about it.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone had any issues with Omega drivers and the S96J? I have seen a few people with other Asus laptops that had issues with Omega drivers, and well... I barely recovered my desktop after trying them. I had to enter safe mode and go to the recovery mode to go back like 5 days to undue all the Omega stuff. I would like to try Omega drivers, but only if they are safe with the S96J.

I think some people do have problems with Omega drivers not only with S96J, I've post some old threads here:

DVD looks grainy? I am not sure I didn't notice that but I can try look carefully and will let you know, but I thought DVD movies actual resolution us only 720X480 and the S96J's LCD is much higher than that.

Yeah, the whole grainy thing was just discussed earlier by a few people. I haven't seen it, so I don't know what they define "grainy" as. They didn't seem to be too turned off by it, so it might not be any huge deal at all. The omega drivers thing seems to be a larger deal than I anticipated. I'm glad I tried them out on my desktop system before I actually got the S96J. I got freaked out with what they did to that system, so I will not be using them on my upcoming laptop. I can handle a loss in fps to not have to deal with those drivers. I had heard they were great, but when I tried them... they literally messed up everything on my computer, and when I restarted windows shut down in the middle of loading, and I had to enter the whole safe mode thing. It really scared me since I don't have anything backed up (should probably do that soon though). Thanks for your time Ken, just as always, I am impressed with your service.

Does GenTech PC Store ship internationally (to Europe)?
I can't find it on the website.

Thank you.
